Jill - I knew you were a chemist when I made that remark about education, which is more than I've ever achieved. I meant that we learn about the best way to conserve and protect our houses through increasing our understanding of all the issues involved, and I accept that there is a huge degree of subjectivity and personal feeling in this.

Of course if we had met face to face I never would have made those remarks, same as you wouldn't shake your fist at someone parking in a car park if you knew them. (I get a lot of fist shaking)

I think Robbie Coltrain is great, and LOVE TV, you can actually LEARN a lot from it ! (still love a good murder though ) does that mean I cant have the mental capacity to be interested in period property then ?

I was joking re the TV remark above, the non TV person does not have a superior attitude, she has probably taken more ribbing in good heart than anyone else on this site (well, apart from Penners, maybe). Don't be put off posting here! We are good people and as you have seen splendidly illustrated by this thread, we are all aware of when we overstep the mark and self flagellate quite enough to suffice, in my opinion!!!!!!!!!!

Whilst I understand your reasons for requesting that (I'm not sure its possible, though thread could be closed to further replies) - Ithink if every thread were removed as a result of 'turning' like this, you would be left with 2 threads on damp walls, 4 on dodgy thatch and a smidgeon of posts about Death Watch Beetle!!!!! You'd also miss out on a lot of humour - and these threads make great reading!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, I'm being fecetious (good grief, how the heck do I spell that??) - but there's good in those comments if people read through them, as well as the bad, which was resolved in the end.

It's probably such a difficult issue because there are two aspects to it. As a home-making exercise I don't think anyone has been particularly critical, indeed it was specifically mentioned that matters of taste are personal and not really open to debate. But as an historic property conservation issue then there are generally accepted guidelines of how to conserve such properties. Where such guidelines are not followed then the result is usually detrimental to the property in question and often irreversible; i.e. things of historic value are lost forever.

The problem, of course, is how to discuss 'bad conservation practice' without personalising things - especially difficult when the property in question is someone's home, which it usually is.

Saying nothing unless you can be pleasant is good advice in many circumstances but I'm not convinced it works in this context, because people come here specifically seeking advice, so surely it's right to point out when 'mistakes' are being made - 'mistakes' in the sense of best conservation practice, rather than a home owner's individual preference.

I think this site should make it clear that only certain types of properties are allowed ie those that are listed, have never had any modernisation done, the owners are going to live with what ever has been done in the past, whether they like it or not, that it all should be saved even if it is unsafe and is damaging to the structure.

Looking at some of the properties that are advertised for sale, they don't look very "period" to me, some definetely have been modernised, had new roofs fitted, beams replaced. Bit hypocritical i think if you are saying this site is only about conservation.

Perhaps you should have a questionaire for people to fill in when they first log in, that way you could all vet them to see if they are acceptable and can be classed as a period property what ever that is supposed to be.
