Oak - a very good material.

I use a ceramic one myself, which has been around for many decades, and I have a sycamore bread trough, used for many more decades by various people.

Back to the serious stuff - surely we should be trying to phase out materials such as uPVC doors and windows from building, in the interest of sustainability, rather than short term profit?

Why be part of the solution when being part of the problem is so much cheaper?

Plastic does have a part in period property refurbishment, but in a wider view it should not as the only benefit is short term cost. What you are saying to true, Manks, plastic windows are cheaper to buy, easier to maintain (cheaper) and easier to fit (cheaper). The only reason that it is currently cheaper to install plastic windows more cheaply than wood is that we depleted wood stocks past the point that demand would tollerate, due at least in part to two world wars.

So, yeah, we are in a position that plastic windows are cheaper than wooden ones at the moment. And, crazily, there are sections of the community that are doing something to alter that situation to promote a more environemntally friendly building ethos and those that are wallowing in all the money they are saving by indirectly harming the environment.

You are right. Correct. Bang on the money. But you don't get to take the moral high ground. You are helping in a small indirect fashion to perpetuate a problem that others feel pretty strongly about. You're hardly ging to get Biff, Nem, Penners and rest of the hardcore purists to suddenly have a 'plastic epiphany' are you?

Actually I did have one of those for a while, but it deteriorated due to exposure to UV and fell to bits.

Now then, calm down children. Play nicely. I've been out all day fitting Jacki's doors with their pretty windows. I'm really quite proud of it so I'll tell you where to find a picture of part of it. Here. I'll post the rest when I get round to photographing it properly. The point is that there are some side panels which are fixed to the brick walls. I used eight quite large plastic rawlplugs. I think they are sometimes easier to use than the pre-plastic era fibre ones. So, there we have it, another use of plastics in the contruction industry. I just hope we don't run out of oil before we've had a chance to stockpile rawlplugs.

As regards window frames, if you divide the cost by the number of years it lasts, you will find that oak (even when I make them) is much cheaper than uPVC.

I believe that there is a landfill issue with discarded plastic windows. There is also a link with cancinogenic (sp?) fumes emitted by the placcy and links associated with asthma.
