New Year's Resolutions?

Back to resolutions:-

- Finish garage

Fail. Working on it last weekend, and this weekend, and no doubt many more weekends to come to finish off that last 5% of the job that just never quite got done.......

- Sort out attic room bedroom for my daughter

Well, yes, sort of, about 3 years ago, it's 99% done and looks lovely, Miss F is very happy up there. Just need to make that final cupboard door to finish it off that I've never *quite* got round to doing.........

- Support Mrs F more with the kids

Best ask Mrs F on that one.

- Make garden at least passably respectable

- Well yes, sort of, it has a lawn at least. Front garden looks OK. Back garden could look much better. Just not quite finished it off, have you spotted the trend yet? :wink:

- Don't buy any more bits for new projects when existing projects have not been completed

Fail - miserable, pathetic, utter failure on that one! The pace of buying new bits for new projects has at least slowed to the point where the old bits for old projects are being used up faster than I buy new bits for new projects, so stocks are slowly depleting......and Mrs F still despairs when I head off to get something I've bought off Ebay for a future project, because you just never know when another one will come up you see.... :wink:

Keeping it short this year, more chance of achieving them! (except the last one, always my downfall...)

Interesting reading over this and thinking back myself too. Last year I resolved to get a nice new pair of chairs, anyone who has read my rantings in "another place" knows how that worked out :lol: suffice to say I don't have any new chairs. The fact that to large measure it is not my fault is small comfort.

- Reassemble my sister's clock mechanism which I took apart for mending some months ago, and get it working again

Sort of, but not in the way intended

- - Lose at least a stone and stay at the lower weight

Lost a stone and a half, put a stone back on then lost another half stone.

Not bad I suppose, but I have had four years

When I wrote this my hall was painted in Soane Yellow with grey woodwork and the cornice was undecorated. I had ambitions to make it red with a polychrome cornice. This I have now done, but there are still a few details to sort out. I would post a picture, but my office system is very effective in blocking the social networking sites where I store such images.

You know we need pictures - yours especially. So please find a way round the problem as soon as possible.

Maybe you could give one of my motorbikes a go then - it's got the sulks after a winter of sitting idle. I've got to get the carbs off now and strip them down and clean them, a job I *detest*......

I used to have to do that job on my old ride-on mower every spring after a winter of no use. Seemed to be the float getting stuck mostly. I assume the petrol inside the carburettor gradually evaporates and the residue gums up the float.

You'll just have to use it more regularly!

Yep, it evaporates and leaves a varnish residue. They need ultrasonic cleaning really, make sure all the jets and hidden passages are clear. Might treat myself to a cleaner - it'll cost me 40 quid to get the 4 carbs cleaned, and you can buy the kit to do it yourself for about 80, and still have the kit at the end.

I need more tools :wink:

Yep, more tools are always good.
An oil pipe on my tractor split a while ago and was the perfect excuse to learn all about pipe-flaring and buying the appropriate tools.

A gas refill can for a cigarette lighter is extremely good for cleaning carb jets and passages. It comes with a selection of adapters to fit just about any bit you are likely to need to clean in a carb, and the high pressure gas both forces blockages out of the way and dissolves most of the residue left by stale petrol.

However, ... ultrasonic cleaner you say? Hmmmm, I don't have one of those, .... yet

They use them for cleaning jewellery and spectacles too. Very bad for emeralds though, often that stone is "oiled" to make the inclusions less optically visible ( it's an accepted treatment ) and an ultrasonic cleaner can remove that and will leave the stone looking of inferior quality.
