Actually, if by mock Geo you mean casements with small panes - the Victorians used those also!

The rotten windows we have were installed in the seventies. The ones put in a couple of centuries' ago have lasted rather better.

Yep, those are the type. I'd be interested to know if anyone can point me in the direction of what the original windows would have been like here. I've read a few books on period properties but found nothing which seems comparable to this place, though there must be plenty about.

Don't know when it was built but the best guess by ourselves and the surveyor was around 150 years back. It's got red pantile roof which has a long slope on both sides, so the walls below are only about 7' max. The windows - and I don't know if they've been altered size-wise over the years - are wide and short. It was almost certainly constructed to house farm labourers for the larger farm estate on which it once stood.

Thanks Biff - I'll take one tomorrow, weather permitting. As it happens I'm just having a look at your site and so far the Yorkshire sash looks most like the shape of the windows here. Interested to read about the linseed paint. Any clues on price and availability for it?

Well, in this particular case it all started when, in your first ever post here, you posted a advertisement for a firm that supplies timber framed garages and the like. You drew particular attention to a "unique" feature of their products (which is found in the products of most of their rivals), and the whole thing read like precisely the sort of promotional spam posting that sometimes appears here, and which is rapidly removed.

Nemesis responded to your post, querying whether it was a genuine recommendation of a bit of advertising.

You then edited your original post, removing the name of the firm and substituting something about Nemesis being a "little Hitler". Not bad for the second ever post by someone who's only been a member of the forum for a week.

The thread was then removed by a moderator.

You then posted the same abusive message about Nemesis on half a dozen threads. I responded.

I suggest you either post something relevant to the subject of period property, which does not constitute an unsolicited advertisement for a particular firm, or stop posting here altogether.

I'm afraid I will not be apologising to you, I suggest you learn not to post abuse, as you did in what was only your second contribution to the forum.

A little thought might have led you not to make your first post look quite so much like advertising, and a check through the rest of the site would have shown that advertising messages are frowned on.

There are polite and impolite ways to argue a point and you chose the second.

As far as curved braces are concerned, the examples on this manufacturer's site - to choose one at random - seem to have them:

Just a sideline about wooden windows; our neighbour has had his metal 1970's windows replaced recently. They're all in dormers at the rear of his house (early 1900's former church). He got a local bloke to make them for him, wood of course, and they look pretty good.
Everyone (well almost) picks upvc because it supposedly doesn't need maintenance, doesn't need painting, companies make stupid claims about it being environmentally-friendly; and the buyers' attitude is "oh well, we might not be here anyway when they need replacing, so it'll be someone else's problem".
Think about what will go to landfill in 10-15+ years' time. I've got a dodgy dining room window, about 130 years old, but it can be fixed by chopping out the bad wood and replacing it. You won't be able to do that if your pvc goes wrong.

PVC pipes are jointed using solfvent, which fuses the plastic together. Presumably as the present stock of pvc windows increases, ages & deteriorates, pvc repairs will become common using rigid pvc pieces plus pvc-in-solvent filler. And presumably the result would then be painted.

Thanks for the feedback on this. Does anyone know what the difference is between the time it takes for a company to manufacture and fit upvc and to manufacture/fit wooden windows? Again, I'm making an assumption, but I would expect upvc to be quicker job. Enlightenment on this would be appreciated.

uPVC will look crap from the outset, even if they prove to be a little more speedy.

There is no getting away from it - they are horrible and will ruin any period building. They are ruining many a period building all over the country.

With pvc you dont just have one downtime, you have another downtime + expense when theyre replaced, and another when those are replaced again. With wood its just once, and thats it for 2 generations or more.

No difference if you buy like for like.

Which is off the shelf UPVC or off the shelf wood.............

Now craftsmenship...........

That's a different matter. It took my Father in Law about 1 week to make three windows and two days to fit them. Plus it took about 6 weeks to source the right timber.

Yes, I think you're right Taff - as you say, a quote costs nowt and at least it'll give me a starting point to budget from if nothing else.

As it happens just yesterday I did pass a red-brick property, larger than mine but probably about the same age, which had unpainted wood windows of the d/g variety and they did look rather good.
