Just to update this and to say a huge thank you for all the help, especially to Jaqy.
Jaqy brought her more expertful eye along, as well as her dispatcher, and the upshot of it is Eustace lives! She didn't think he was at death's door: far from it. He's gone to live with her for a bit, with his pretty little friend Bathsheba, and I'd imagine he could pull through this in a different environment away from the depressing (to him) sight of Harrowby, who has just started deflowering everyone. Jaqy has a lot more land than me and dogs to protect it without the need for so much fencing, etc.
The rats - have gone. So thank you very much to Pford and judrop for getting me to see that I was just feeding rats by leaving food in the run overnight. What amazes me is that there are no rat holes - it's not as if they tunnel in, have a look for food, see there's none, and scuttle off. They just don't come at all. How do they know? And we're talking about corn and grain here, so I can't believe sense of smell is helping them much. Are they watching me carrying out smaller portions, and feeding in the house, not run? :shock:
I gave the house a big clean, and when I removed the plastic membrane I'd laid on top of the floor I found the wood of the floor was very wet, soaking actually. So I 've removed the plastic and just put down Stalosan (a kind of medicated, disinfecting sand) and clean, dry, dust extracted wood shavings. I'm hoping the wood will dry out. If it doesn't, rot might set in, and rats might find it very easy to gnaw through the floor to get at the feed - so I'm a bit concerned about this presently.
But all in all a good result!

Don't worry about making it easier for them to chew. They are incredible chewers and can get in anyway. The food situation should be the answer I think.

A very quick reply just to confirm that Eustace and Bathsheba are doing well. I had intended to keep them in a small field shelter and construct a small run for them to see how they got on but today was such a lovely day here that I let them straight out this morning to meet the others and have a poddle around. They stayed close by each other all day, while mixing in with some of the others. They've both been eating well (grass, nettles, corn, grower and grit) and have done a spot of sunbathing They're both now roosted with my others in the crewyard.
One thing I noticed, Joce, when I let them out this morning was that they went for grit off the pathway straight away. Do you give yours supplementary grit with them being in a pen? They need grit to help break down their food.

So pleased to hear they are picking up. I thought Eustace was going to be joining "my" chicken which departed recently. I say my loosely as she was a "free range" chicken that wondered about our neighbourhood for the past two years. Never thought a chicken would cross the road as many times or have so much characterView attachment 2View attachment 1

I lost one of mine very recently, too. Another Warren. She was originally found wandering outside KFC in Newark and was 'rescued' by a nurse at my dentists. She passed her on to me and I had her for about 5 years. She was a real character, just like yours. She used to sleep in one of the dog kennels :lol: Maybe it's a Warren thing? :roll:

Jaqy- I'm so pleased! That's just lovely, and thank you so much for taking pics and sharing. S/He looks much brighter at yours and I can't believe how they're integrating with the others. Maybe s/he just really hated those Cath Kidston curtains in his room? :lol:

Never ceases to amaze me just HOW cleaver chooks are , and Warrrens have a special sort of savvy dont they ?

Oh, I love that chicken roundabout place. Though I have to say a lot of the birds look male - which makes me wonder if that's Norfolk's cockerel dumping ground. :shock:
