I have rats living under the hen house, and a very sick cockerel. (He is my second-in-command lame cockerel, who I bought from a breeder with even less sense and experience than me who sold him as a girl. I have mentioned before that Eustacia had to be rechristened Eustace- and a useless Eustace he's turned out to be, though I've grown fond of him. )
What to do about the rats? Any products, do's or don'ts?
And what to do about the cockerel? Jaqy has incredibly generously offered to come here with a guillotine - at what point do I just say that's it for you Eustace-bye bye? This is the worst thing, even worse than the fox attack.
If I let him go on, and it's something contagious, they could all get it and die. If I kill him, I will have to live with the fact that Nature, and his youth, may have lead him to recover...
The hen forum is no help on this occasion, the consensus being that even a sick unwanted cockerel deserves the attention of the vet with ensuing fees for blood tests, drips, overnight hospitalisation etc...Even I am not so chicken crazy to think that makes any kind of sense.
Anyone want a really ill cockerel? Or any pet rats?
