No elephant's here, or so I thought until I remembered this one - well, half elephant anyway.
It was given to me during a business trip to India. I didn't fully realise the significance at the time but apparently Lord Ganesh is known as the 'remover of obstacles' as well as the patron God of travelling - so very apt in the circumstances.

Ganesh is indeed very useful, covers a lot of important departments! His "vehicle" is the rat, that's why there is often one carved on the pieces somewhere. Strange it should be that animal given the Western tradition that elephants are scared of mice ( and presumably rats as well ). Lladro recently did a series of 4 Ganesh playing different musical instruments. So many people asked for matching rats that they did launch a piece called "small mouse", they are quite tiny and in some of the shops they keep them hidden to avoid the five finger discount problem. We have a few Ganesh as well as elephants, this is our largest, Indian, but bought in Singapore.

We have elephants,2 lovely ebony ones on a window sill, my Mother always said that they must walk towards the door. Elephant embroidered on a cushion and a lion for a door stop!
A Dealer friend of mine has one GORGEOUS elephant in his shop, stands about 4ft tall and has a wonderful patina because everybody strokes the beautiful wooden back, most covetable, very expensive and must have been one of a pair standing on either side of a staircase.
Love them and lions too.

So nice to see peoples pachyderms, ours have crept in everywhere, and I wouldn't advocate that, but a few is nice.

I've been missing my Georgian style Print Room, so have come back to finish certain bits (though true finishing is a long way off - more work needed on the doors, the lunettes, the lighting, a rug, a Sheraton style pelmet...).
I find, now it's too late, that the best collection of 19th C Lincolnshire Prints on Ebay is in the States currently. Grrr. They weren't listed under Prints, but the general section "Art" - so there's a tip - search on Ebay in multiple ways. I'm having Grantham Market Place sent from Seattle. :roll:
Anyway, I couldn't believe it when I wandered into one of Newark's amazing antique shops and saw this chaise longue upholstered to match my curtains. I love repro. I could never afford a true Regency chaise of this quality - and in these proportions (just 55 inches long!) it wouldn't exist. This is Art Deco aping Regency style. The upholstery, in silk and velvet, is really spot on. If anyone wants the details of the Retford upholsterer PM me, as I think he's excellent, and reasonably priced.
And some pics of the hanging sections for the few people who haven't seen those yet - and thanks to lots of you for putting up with all this twice (or more times!) over. And thanks again to Gareth for continued help and advice.
(The lemon millefleur sabelpoots are now living outside, and the cat has been dissuaded from the new chaise by switching on the electric blanket on the bed)

That's so elegant, you will have to recline there while the maid does the housework :lol: . I am surprised the cat was enticed away, any new piece of furniture usually needs thorough investigattion.
Funny about the hometown prints being in Seattle. Things always turn up in unexpected places though. We have a lovely map of London that we got in Bath at a very reasonable price. Antique Japanese ceramic elephants have turned up in Barcelona and Nuremberg and a silver Australian Kookaburra coin came from Kyoto among other out of place oddities.

Thank you. xxx My mother in law hated it so it's so nice to show it to people who understand the fun and richness, depth and fascination of decorative techniques from long ago. Chris has come round to loving it, which is great.
Gareth suggests I do Print Rooms for a living so perhaps I will be turning up with my scissors, on your doorsteps, to expand my portfolio. The next Print Room would be amazing, and the only lady doing them in this country doesn't have a website or promote herself at all.
Perhaps that's because each Print Room takes around a thousand hours. But if I could get the people to choose and buy their own prints, and cut out the hanging pieces themselves, I'd shave off around 950 hours.

This room is truly beautiful! I love the colour (and the whole effect, of course) - Do you remember what colour it is? I have already re-painted our yellow hall twice, but I just can't find a hue that I like.

What has happened to poor chayses lonjues is most unfortunate - I saw one the other day, in black plastic flock, at £39.99! A similar fate has befallen garden statues, pillars, chandeliers - all manner of country house paraphernalia. It's very sad.
Thanks Heather- that's sweet of you to say so. The third picture down most accurately reflects the mustardy yellow of the room, on my PC anyhow. It's Print Room yellow by Farrow and Ball. Yellow is difficult, potentially, but I love living with this slightly moody version of a sunny colour.

I just read through the quotation from my joiner to make a door for that stone stairwell - £460, without ironmongery. 4 panels, and beading in those panels to match the other doors, and that includes hanging it too and fitting the ironmongery we supply. Is that reasonable do you think? I have no idea how long such a piece of work would take.
