Leaking shallow pitched tiled roof

We haven't measured the pitch but have had a general builder and a specialist roofer round and both said it was too shallow. The builder suggested a method similar to the one above where the final layer of tiles is pretty much decorative. The roofer said that it would look wrong to have a different type of tile up there and suggested the leadwork. I'd be interested to know if anyone has used something similar.

And yes we know about the tile! We've just bought the place after renting it for ages and there are lots of jobs to do. Repairing the roof is first on the list along with sorting out the guttering and drainage. A lot of water comes off that thatch and the neighbouring house is also higher so we have some damp problems in the joining wall - but that's another thread . . .

I'm not sure I agree with your roofer that lead would look better than a different tile. Lots of buildings have different types of tiles for different areas of roof. It can look very attractive IMO. And of course, lead is also a change of material!

If you can find a tile to work at the pitch you have, or alter the pitch, then fair enough. I'd just have a horror of using tiles just for decoration, if I knew there was a flat roof structure underneath them.

I really like the look of lead roofs. They can look amazing http://www.birstall.co.uk/products/whsps008.html - although I'm not so sure about the finials, and I don't think you'd want anything quite so ostentatious!

Thanks for all the advice. I'm still not sure about using different tiles. I think I'll start off looking at the costs of altering the pitch of the roof. The leading on the summerhouses in the link above looks great too. I still can't imagine it on the house but will ask the roofer to point out some local examples, as suggested.

No, they need steeper pitch. A look at a typical concrete tile will show why.


You can put any type of roof finish on any pitch of pitched roof if you roof it with asbestos* first, then add your tiles/slates/whatever you like.

That depends on the type of tile. Clay peg tiles need a steeper pitch than slates.

Sure - but as the main building is tile and the one next =oor is thatch it's going to look very, very odd.

As it seems the porch isn't really very historically significant and the corru looks like asbestos (if it's tin I'd replace with tin) then certainly I'd try to see if the pitch can be raised a little.

PS lead will go dull in time and match the thatch... ...

Yes the current porch roof is asbestos.

I'm not totally against the idea of using corrugated iron. A lot will depend on how much it will cost to change the pitch or instal a leaded roof. There are lots of jobs to do on the house so we have to work out priorities. Though this is one thing I'd rather get right to start with.

The shallowest pitch tiles go shallower than the shallowest pitch slating is wot i mented. Although technically that might be incorrect, having seen single stone slab roofs on outhouses.
