I was still using arc lamps in the 80s, maybe I'm just out of touch with all this modern stuff.

At least I'm not using the valve computer today, the screwup fairy seems to have gone (temporarily).

Ive just had to replace a dimmer switch and it buzzes, is that normal?

Ive also replaced another double dimmer and it has four connections to the rear of each switch, L1, L2, 3 and a symbol like a sun ( circle with lines out from its perimeter ) - from wall I have one wire with a black, red and earth wire and one wire with just a red.
Previously the wires from wall went black to L1, Red from other wire to L2 on same terminal , Red from first to terminal with an arrow, leaving a seperate wire connecting the two L2 terminals together - earth to eart.

Ive reconnected but dosent work, any ideas?

Some cheap dimmer switches do emit a slight buzz, particularly when the light is considerably dimmed. This should disappear when the light is turned up full. High quality dimmers are built to suppress this buzz.
