I treasure my grandfather's woodworking and gardening tools. His spade is in almost daily use: it's had four new handles and two new blades, and it's still as good as the day he bought it.

They don't make tools like that nowadays.

Wise words I'm sure Penners, I'm not very good at sitting still. Doc has told me that keeping active but not overdoing it is important, I'll try to be good.......

Still, I've got a second set of industrial strength painkillers from the doctors today and a referral to an osteopath, so hopefully it will get sorted. New painkillers actually seem to do something, so the idea of my 45 minute drive to work doesn't seem out of the question now.

Glad to hear you are on the mend. I have been told that one of the best things for a bad back is to work on strengthening the other muscles of the core area, abdominals and suchlike, so everything is held in place. Proper lifting technique for anything heavy too, the guys at the gym who lift really heavy stuff use those big belt things, for a laugh I tried one, but even on the smallest setting there was room for me and a friend :lol:

Osteopath is worthwhile. The wife went to one after long-standing back trouble and was given exercises to strengthen up other muscles. She is OK now.

My greenhouse and fence are less OK. A neighbour bumped in the fence the day it was finished with enough force to break a concrete spur and push the fence into the greenhouse. :shock: It's all easily fixable but there was quite a lot of damage to her car and she had already had a bad week.

Quite right, sitting still is actually a bad thing. You have to keep the back moving - gently!

Done! Bathroom looking better with my reclaimed favourite Charlotte hand basin, pedestal and Armitage Shanks gold taps, and matching taps for bath.

Reclaimed basin from Norfolk Reclaim--it turned out to be the set I put into my house in BM in 2003, the current owners have been doing some refurbishments and stuff had gone to the Reclaim yard-I stumbled upon it quite by chance!!! (got it all for under £50.00) :!: :!:

. As our stairwell is really high, redecorating again is a non starter; so with a muddy Labrador and tea spilling OH I decided to run a dado rail down parallel to the bannister rail so I can keep that lower part repainted as required--or maybe even papered, but it would have to be wipeable!

Electrics are just a case of running in some trunking to skirting to get sockets in the right places---cheapo way I am afraid, but there are hardly any original features left in this little thrown together artisan 1900's house.

Now for my dumb blonde question-- our Vendors, in their wisdom, installed some revolting PVC windows to the side of the house. Can I attach a baton to the internal top bit of PVC.? I want install a roman blind to fit snug against the frame.--Honestly what a stupid question to ask but I am really not used to dealing with this modern rubbish--just have to make the best of it. Replacing with wooden frames is not an option at the moment.

I've never tried fixing anything to a uPVC window frame ('cos I've never had any ), but I don't imagine it would be difficult. If I were trying it, I think I would drill small pilot holes and use self-tapping screws (although I reckon ordinary wood screws would probably work). I don't know strong the fixing would be, but I don't imagine a Roman blind is very heavy, is it?

When you put the screws in, don't use an electric screwdriver - this risks spinning the screws in their holes, which would considerably reduce their grip.

Do you need instructions on how to make a Roman blind?

I recommend a sharp blow to the corner of the glass of each unit. A metal hammer is best. Repeat until all the uPVC windows are shot.

It won't solve your blind problem, but your windows will look better. 8)

Yes, but make sure you are clear of the glass.

Your bathroom is sounding great, I'm jealous our bath is still in living room but I have finally managed to polish the enamel and paint the outside. It shouldn't be many more months before I'll get it fitted, after two years without, I'm ready for a bath.

Our erstwhile redundant pub on the Lleyn peninsula had uPVC windows (we didn't know any better, back then). I attached various things to them by the simple expedient of drilling a pilot hole, then using self-tappers to do the business.

As Penners says, don't use an electric screwdriver: there's a high probability of overtorqueing the screws, which means a new, larger screw is needed ... and so on.

I have to admit to a fair bit of guilt stripping away so much history. I have recorded the various colours I came across and am regretting buying gloss white after seeing some of the lovely cream that's gone before (as well as the mustard...)

The finish nearest to the wood (i.e. earliest) - I'm not sure what it is. It might be an undercoat but is almost like a stain (the light brown/red colour with dark graining). The wood itself is quite light in colour - you can see where I've nicked it with my scraper. Any thoughts?



Interestingly the verge timber that was intact underneath the pvc is aerodynamic! I have used flat 6x1 but the original is shaped like the top of an aerofoil. Pretty advanced stuff for 1905 ish!

The Roman Blind was a find at the Stately Home Boot Fair--all ready made and ready to use---hence my silly question about fixing it to PVC---- with that, I shall proceed with great caution!!!
