Its a holiday weekend what happening at your period property

For me its continuing decorating the hallway, Di will finish it off whilst l moved into the dining room. First job in the dinning room is to remove and refurbished the window storm shutters. I also have some lime plaster to repair and then the sanding wood work starts.

Rescheduled lime washing from Easter now the repairs should be done after some rude person crashed into house!

Also might start entertaining the idea of re pointing the privy.

Hope to get first cut of the grass done and the limewash finished. Possibly lay some tiles on the front doorstep and also see if the new 9m ladder will reach the top of the Leylandii hedge...

We finished the greenhouse building today. Just need to buy some guttering and make some staging tomorrow. When the fence is finished and a ton of top soil added the wife will be able to make a start on the garden.

How would you go about protecting a wooden greenhouse like this? The instructions suggest the wood is pressure treated and will last for ever, and they suggested a silicone sealant on the windows which I did on the side glass but feel a bit nervous about it. I was thinking about using some sort of oil on the greenhouse and fence.

Covered the cordon apples last night as the blossom is nicely forming and don't want to lose it all to frost before it even gets a chance to flower! Ne'er cast a clout and all that!

How would you go about protecting a wooden greenhouse like this?

Nice big greenhouse! While I tend to treat all exterior wood with with either linseed oil or waste engine oil (and sometimes both!) to my eye a greenhouse never looks right in plain wood. I'd be attacking it with white linseed oil paint.

Today I have been mostly playing on the scaffolding, tidying up a few odds and ends, assessing chimneys and measuring up replacement rainwater goods!

Oh no Ebenezer, what happened?
I'm doing floorboards, floorboards, floorboards. Very slow, because they don't all fit together, the tongues and grooves are at different heights, so I've made a spreadsheet (I know, I know....) of all their widths, thicknesses and heights of tongues and grooves, so when I know what size I need, I look it up, and go and get the correct numbered board from the pile! Even so, it's still a task getting them to fit, and I've had to chisel bits off here and there, including from fingers..
Also, went out into the garden, and found all this stuff had appeared, which wasn't there a couple of weeks ago. Green stuff, all standing upright from the ground. Don't know what it all is, but there was loads of it, so I did my biannual gardening session, which involves dragging armfuls of stuff into the green bin.

Oh no Ebenezer, what happened?

Someone clipped the front bottom corner of our house, which pulled the metal beading off and took a nice section of lime render with it! Don't know who it was. It's all fixed now but I'm a bit concerned that frosts in a row now won't be doing the new lime render any good!

Those floorboards sound very complex!

At Feltwell Towers, depressingly little is happening this weekend. In fact, old episodes of Top Gear on Dave are trying and failing to stave off the boredom, such is the level of desperation.

I've done my back in, which is immensely frustrating as I've had several prior weekends of not being able to get anything done as well, for various other reasons.

Started the framing of the garage. The dwarf walls are up (not that sort of dwarf) and now we're into that part of the works where I can do some myself, and the builders, who are on dayworks, may thereby feel slightly less indispensable and work a tad faster. Not that they're bad by any means, but...

We, that is to say, I, have been amending the dims and details of the (expensive) plans as we go along, all very well if one is DIYing the whole job, but a little difficult when parts of it have perforce to be delegated. The pristine drawings are now copiously annotated, my [young] builders further tortured by the fact that I don't use foreign measurements.
Never mind, so long as the end result keeps the water out and looks not too new.

A far better use for vinegar, I have to say, than pickling the vintage 2013 gherkins we now feel obliged to eat. :|

Also.... our Roberts R800 needed the tuning cord re-reeving, a hugely fiddly job especially now that my eyesight is not as it once was... so a certain smugness pervaded as I contemplated its successful execution. Until I reassembled it and found that the sound had vanished.... zip, nada...
Bought another on eBay, it arrived, looked immaculate, seller had 10000 feedback, switched it on...zip, nada... checked/swapped the power cord.... nooooooo.
So now I have two period radios, ornamental use only. At least the seller refunded me.
Now, I suppose, I shall have to pay someone to mend one or the other, as I lack the component-level skills to essay a fix. Sigh...

But I came in at 1715h to listen to Words & Music, knew it would be a good edition, was it the best ever? Perhaps...
Normally we wait on dinner until it's finished, the high point of the broadcasting week, but this evening we planned a walk so we ate dinner early while it was on, salmon, then rice pudding cooked in the oven, silence, unpunctuated by customary asides about seasoning and wine while we listened.
A pure experience, the distracting TV banality of pictures absent, and not knowing in advance the content, unlike a favourite album or even a new one.
Only slightly marred by the inferior sonic quality of the 1960s Bush, standing in for the R800.

An exchange of an hour of my life that might have been spent sawing and nailing, in the garden, the colour-washed garden, the sun-warmed drive, bird song, horses clipclopping up the lane, an hour well spent.

And the day's sawing, hammering, a hammer that was my father-in-law's, a set-square that belonged to a favourite uncle dead last year and his wife joined him last week age 91, a chisel that was my fathers - in the ground these ten years - and his father's before him, a drill from the 40s a huge B&D in that alloy which followed the war, given by a dear neighbour of 30 years, gone ahead. And I think of those who will use the garage in future, who I shall never know.

A day removed from the modern world.
