The CO's view is that the doors were not part of the historical fabric of the building as they were not the original doors. When restoration of the house started there was no roof, free flying gables, no internal walls and a 100 yrs of debris to dig out of the ground floor. All the origional internal features bar the stonework had been taken. I have a lot of admiration for the PO as he took the building on when no one else would, when the Council and EH could not help and he alone reversed its fortunes. Without him, the building would have been lost. As a result, the CO gave him much latitude in the development. I'm just really happy that all the work was previously discussed with the CO and we do not have to undo any of it.
Now we will bring the building forward with all that it needs and it will once again be in use

Sonya, don't get me wrong - I have some admiration for the PO too! And I wasn't suggesting that the doors were necessarily covered by the listing, but my understanding of property law (which is, admittedly, limited!) is that doors, once fitted, would become part of the permanent fixtures & fittings (as would the heating system) and at repossession you can't simply remove everything of value and walk away.
But as we agreed before, your approach is far more pragmatic and healthy, where I would be sulking in a corner and have no doors for 20 years!

No internal walls! Gosh. How sad that it suffered such a fate. And how nice its fortunes are reversed!
Such a relief you haven't inherited illegal work, brilliant. And the more I think about the PO, the more I realise how devastating it must be to put so much into a house and lose it with the finances. He ought not to have taken the doors, or the rads, morally speaking - but I can understand it. Loss can make a person act very bitterly. Not nice for you to have to put it right though.

Successful negotiation with the previous owner finally proved fruitful as we now have 26 oak internal doors. We are now potless!

Worms, the doors were bought for the price I said should be paid, five months down the line. Hubby went to get various quotes and then came to his senses! I was in my office yesterday whilst the doors were moved. Apparently, there was much swearing.....they are enormously heavy!

Our lovey builder has got four up today. He really is a great forward going guy and we are lucky to have him. I will take pictures on Friday when I'm there and post.

That's good! I've never lived in a house without doors, but I would imagine that 26 doors will make quite a difference to the feel of the place!

If my husband is impressed, then they must be really something! Now I'm just worried about three pairs of fingers and very heavy doors. I think we will have to use some child safeguard thingies for a while till they get used to the weight of them.
I worked on a lovely old farm house a few years back and the owner didnt want doors, as a result he had to jump through hoops and have a fire extinguisher system fitted throughout the house at a huge cost. Every thing had to be considered, wiring etc etc.
