Lines, lines, lines, vertical with repeated notches on the lines, maybe something slung over the door repeatedly? Something with a chain or strap with a metal part, bridle or some other equestrian accoutrements? Large lead? Something like that.Ok, I'm definitely convinced to keep them. Any ideas on what the marks on this one are or what may caused them?

What do they feel like? What’s the profile of indent? I’m guessing smooth and rounded…Ok, I'm definitely convinced to keep them. Any ideas on what the marks on this one are or what may caused them?
What is an Archaeological Building Record? A bloke or woman pops round, has a look and takes a guess? Good luck! You can normally get clues doing local historical research, houses were often built together, sometimes organised by a local businessman or related to some business event, for example the setting up of a farm or factory (bit early for that) Sometimes there was an order from the Lord of the manor and this was recorded and these things can corroborate or deny dates based on building style, materials and construction techniques. Buildings were often built in chunks after some economic event made the locality favourable for increased habitation. This may be related to local churches, manor houses, schools, pubs! or municipal buildings so it's always good to survey all other period buildings in the area for which there may be extant records. I can normally date properties to within 100 years, less for urban dwellings from the 1700's but you usually need documentary evidence from other sources to hone it down. I would not trust one persons guess based on their limited experience simply on how things look. Exciting though if they do their homework. No definite date, but we suspect the early part of the 17th century. We had to have an Archaeological Building Record completed, so when I get that in a couple of weeks I may know a bit more.
