Got a phone call from the hospital this morning - they double check X-Ray images and have now decided that I have fractured my wrist after all! I've gone in for an appointment and I spotted the fracture on the X-Ray image straight away - so I'm not quite sure what the A&E doctor was doing. I'm rather annoyed, not at the doctor but because now I may have to have my wrist in plaster for 6 weeks, just when I thought it was getting much better and I could get on with some work on the house this weekend! :evil:

Of course this is just plaster for 6 weeks. It doesn't compare to the enternity of suffering Penners has with his back.

You have my sympathies Feltwell. My wrist was in plaster for 6 weeks after falling on any icy pavement. Mine snapped in 2 places and dislocated so did take a while to recover. Being in plaster for 6 weeks though means no driving and then when the plaster comes off, your arm is all weak and withered. If it's a small break, see if you can get an alternative to plaster as it's so debilitating and restricting.

At last I'm managing to get some real sympathy for my unenviable predicament, against which all others pale into insignificance.

However, let's not talk about me - I do hate it so.

Feltwell, very tough luck, old chap. I can imagine the frustration of suddenly finding that you're hors de combat for six weeks.

The only thing I can suggest to dull the pain and annoyance is, since you're plastered for six weeks, you might as well get plastered for six weeks.

It'll help to pass the time.

Bad luck Feltwell, but at least they've noticed it now rather than possibly have it heal badly.

When FF jnr broke his arm (only about an inch up from the wrist) we were joking in the fracture clinic about what a shame it was because he was due to run the 600m for his school in the area athletics finals in a few weeks time. When the doctor heard this he said he would prescribe a 'sports cast' (I think it was called) instead of the usual plaster cast. This turned out to be a lightweight resin-based cast and, apart from holding the wrist and arm in alignment, didn't seem to hinder movement as much a a big heavy cast.

I've no idea if they still have these, or if they would be applicable, but it might be worth asking. They had a nice range of pretty colours too instead of the standard white.

One other thing that we only found out in passing was having the cast split if you're planning on flying anywhere. Again, we had mentioned a trip to Orlando and the doctor said that we should come in a few days before flying to have the cast split, which meant it was cut along its length and held in place with a bandage that could be loosened in case the arm swelled slightly during the flight. I was a bit surprised that no one specifically mentioned this, especially as it was around the end of summer term and holidays would hardly be unexpected.

Other than that, I think Penners' prescription sounds about right. :wink:

If you were in the US it would be time to call the lawyer..... even after the fees there would be money left over to have a man in to fix things while you were recovering. Not that I am suggesting that approach, but I do find it worrying that there is a Dr out there working in A and E who can't spot a fracture :shock:

Whilst I agree that pefection belongs to God I think you are being very charitable, to me the term "mistake" wouldn't really cover it. If a doctor can't see a broken bone on an X ray I am wondering exactly what malady he would correctly diagnose...... Come to think of it maybe Mr P should get a second opinion on his back problem, much as I am sure he would hate all the fuss and bother and the young nurses concerned about his suffering.

In this case the hospital doctor has clearly made a mistake, but the hospital has a procedure in place to double check all X-Ray results and that procedure has done what it is meant to do and has picked up the mistake in time for corrective action to be taken. I would hope - but admit I do not know - that the same procedure would also highlight if a particular doctor is routinely making errors.

A close member of my family had a similar experience with a cancer mis-diagnosis - a biopsy result came back clear, but a double check procedure with a radiographer raised doubts and a second biopsy was immediately done. That second biopsy confirmed that she did have cancer, and a re-examination of the first result revealed that mistakes were made. We know that actions were taken very swiftly as a result to stop a repeat of the error.

The unsettling element of that story is that the double-check procedure with the radiographer is not standard practice across the NHS - it just happened to be so for the area we lived in at the time. The lady concerned went on to make a full recovery, but you do wonder what may have happened if she had lived elsewhere.

Yes, the checking does seem to be routine, 800 people x-rayed over a two week period by one locum needing re-examined here.
