Amid all this discussion of other people's medical problems, I do hope you haven't all forgotten about my bad back.

I'm in constant pain.

But I never talk about it.

Glad to hear that, did you get them to give you a sling anyway so you could make the kids feel guilty?

That would make me feel guilty actually! Just over a year ago, whilst bouncing on the trampoline with me, my daughter landed badly and broke her arm. 8 hours in A&E - and all on the day before her 5th birthday. How bad did I feel! We even had to postpone her birthday party. She put such a brave face on it all.

Philipjuk, hope your son is OK. I'm surprised the doctor won't stitch him up. Maybe times have changed - it was a good hour's drive to the nearest A&E when I was a kid, the village doctor did all but the most serious of patching up.

That reminds me of one of the most awful times of my life. I was also bouncing on the trampoline with my oldest who was then about 6 or 7. It got a bit bouncy (I'm not exactly svelte!) and, despite the net, Sam landed with his head on the more solid part where the springs are and "rolled up" over his neck. He just lay there looking dazed and surprised and I really thought I'd broken his neck. Thankfully he was back on his feet quickly and just complaining of a sore neck.

I learnt two things that afternoon:

a) never bounce on a trampoline with kids (yes I know it already says so on the instructions, but we never adhere to those do we!);

b) the quickest way through A&E on a busy Saturday afternoon is to say loudly to the receptionist "child" and "neck injury". You get sped through without feet touching the ground.

I feel physically sick just thinking about it all again.

Phil - although this is now an "old" injury - he should still get it checked out in A&E - just to make sure he has not damaged any of the structures underneath (nerves, tendons, etc). I once slipped with a bowsaw exposing the tendons on the back of my hand.

Incidentally, if ever getting stitched in A&E and you don't want the casualty SHO to practice their knitting skills on your face, ask if you can be stitched by maxfax (or plastics in a bigger hospital). Generally they are neater cosmetically.

My wife (now a GP) did some A&E rotations as a junior - she said the most fun was a Saturday night in A&E in Dunfermline, stapling up the abusive drunks without anaesthetic/pain relief. :shock:

Trampolines are accidents just waiting to happen. FF jnr broke his arm in a similar manner when he was about 10; bounced off a friend's trampoline, fell backwards, put out his arm out to brace himself - crack! Quite nasty, and needed a couple of pins (a fancy name for long nails, banged in under a general anaesthetic) to stabilise the bone while it healed.

But kids of that age heal so quickly that he was back kayaking within six weeks.

Thanks for your concern F-W,I tranfered enough cash into his account for a taxi to and from the hospital but as yet he has not been,I was worried that his idea of "clean" when in DIY mode may be a bit short of the medical ideal! but his partner retuned from work and did a better job of cleaning it.What worried me was that he said he felt no pain but this morning says it has "scabbed"over and throbs a bit.Still trying to get him to get a"dose of looking at" in A&E but fear that he wants to get on with the decorating and the cash will get spent on food(or fags!).Its only dad what does he know? thnks again,phil.

Boys :roll: ! the only creatures that can catch a common cold and be sure it's flu, possibly bronchitis but more likely double pneumonia requiring much TLC and sympathy, and then when faced with a nasty injury tell you it's nothing that needs professional help!

Well, I wouldn't normally bring it up, but it's recently dropped a smidgin below agony level. So my brave little face is shining, this morning.

waiting in A+E can be such a pain (see what i did there?) however , bring a bottle oh ketchup with you , before you go into A+E pour it all over you. at this stage you have permission to start crying like a little girl. the doctors will then think you have mental healthy problems as you are covered in ketchup and whining like a dying cat and they will put you to the front of their list , usually in an attempt to get you out of the building quicker.
it helps if you spray lemon juice into your eyes as well.

When Mr M broke his wrist (knocked off his motorcyle by uninsured driver) he had these pins banged in too. When they came to remove them, he asked if he could keep them as a souvenir but was told this wasn't allowable on Health & Safety grounds and was informed "They are sharp you know!"..... :roll:

Giving away fancy nails on the NHS? Has no one heard of budget cuts? Half an hour in an autoclave and they'll probably bang them into someone else's broken bones.

Waiting to have stitches out at the qmc in nottingham the nurse arrived at the bed and unwrapped her kit all on a little tray,after taking the dressing off she noted that there were no stitches just staples and tossed the tray at the bin and went to collect a staples kit.Her aim was not good and the kit had fallen between the bin and the wall so when she had finished I retrieved it,the scissors were well made stainless ones and I now use them for cutting out gaskets!Her aim with the staple kit was better and it found the bin,what a waste!phil.
