How many people are living in their forever home?

I dream of a bath. I've had just one this year and they're one of my favourite things! But our water shortage is such that a daily 8 minute shower for 2 is pushing it really, especially in summer, when Chris had to make do with a wash and I had to go to the club. In winter we might be able to stretch to a few more baths with the increased rainfall but the current bath is cast iron and consequently chills the water to tepid within 5 minutes- hopeless.

The plan is a bath from Albion which is made of iso enamel and, possibly, development and pumping of our spring in the field. But it's all £££££s that we don't really have.

I'd sooner have that than live on a road again though, or have neighbours.

I've dithered over whether to get a bath or shower.....I'm 42.

A shower is cleaner and more environmentally friendly than a bath. Personally, I also find it much more refreshing.

My 99-year-old father refuses to have a shower. It's just not something that his generation has become accustomed to. He has a powered rise-and-fall chair that lifts him into and out of the bath water.

Do people really manage that? I could barely "cover all the bases" in that time

I've only got one base, and it certainly takes me more than 2 - 3 minutes to "cover" that!

The answer to the bath rapidly chilling the water may be hidden in your lack of neighbours . . . .

Our shower still seems like a luxury facility after not having one at my parents home, and they still haven't joined the modern world!

A hot shower is much like a comfy bed - difficult to get out of in a morning!

I find it tiring having a shower, not relaxing at all. If I shut my eyes and my ears are running with water I lose my sense of balance and fall over. But I can fall asleep in a lovely hot bath.
It has to a long one with a gently sloping end, and taps easily turned by ones toes.
And a shelf to put the wine glass on.

The trouble is, it may have been lovely and hot before you fell asleep, but you tend to wake up in a lukewarm soup, with your fingers and toes all wrinkled and pruney.

Ooo yes - I've always liked that sort of bath! :wink:

Mind you, no chance of any such shenanigans here, the bath isn't really big enough for me on my own let alone with company from Mrs F!

The bathroom here really is completely out of proportion with the rest of the house - it's far too narrow, such that it has a narrow bath in it with a loo squeezed in alongside at the tap end. When the house was new and it was simply a bath room - the Victorians of course having nothing as unsanitary as a toilet inside the house - it wouldn't have been great but a wider bath could have been put in, at the expense of floor standing room.

We have an en-suite as well, made from what would have been a box room originally, but happily one that always had a window. This is great and has a nice big shower cubicle in it, plenty of room, but as such it's also being taken over by my kids - why would they want a shower standing in a bath with a shower curtain (I *hate* shower curtains and how they stick to you!) when they could use a nice big shower cubicle instead!

I do have the option to take away some of the room in the en-suite by moving the end wall in and turn it into a "just big enough" en-suite, and in doing so give that room to the bathroom to create an L-Shaped bathroom. Then I could put one of those P-shaped "shower baths" across the end of the room, that are both wider as a bath but also have a decent shower area with a screen.

However, it's on the long long list of things to do, it would be awkward to do the job and keep at least the bathroom or en-suite in service - one would have to be! I suspect it will be a long time coming, if at all.......

I agree with Feltwell that 20 minutes is pretty much the norm.

I've definately run out of things to wash by that time!

Perhaps one could also take one's wine into the shower, in one of those children's beakers with the spout?

If I come in after doing something strenuous outdoors (as if!) then a shower is perfect.

If it's been a long day and I'm feeling achey and generally exhausted, then the new super-comfortable bath it is.

I can sit in there for two to three hours with a book, some music, and a large G&T. The hot tap is left to trickle gently, and the water stays the right temperature. 'Tis bliss!

I liked baths till I had my daughter - now 5. Now every time I sneak off for a nice bath with a good book, she suddenly appears and decides she's coming in too - along with half a dozen assorted Barbie dolls.

We left both our cats buried in the garden of our 30-year house. Rather wish we'd had them stuffed, then they'd still be with us, but without the faff of getting up in the night to let them out.

Well we planned for our house to be our 'forever home' but sometimes it seems local council seem hell-bent on destroying the area by granting planning permission for as many houses as they can without upgrading anything around it, so the traffic just gets worse and worse, and the little green areas vanish. I think it's more a 'death by 1000 cuts' than one big ugly development.

Can't see us moving for a good while yet anyway. Been here a year, done two of the rooms. Hopefully will get on with the lounge this year, and want to reinstate a fireplace in that one.

We sold our *forever* home back in 2007 when our son went off to uni and realisation dawned that at over 3500 sq ft it was just too big for the two of us......

It was a rather lovely detached Victorian (1888) house on the South Coast that was very forlorn when we rescued it from its current incarnation as four fiats ten years previously. It was our dream home and one that we felt extremely privileged to be able to afford at such a young age. We lavished time, love, effort and heaps of cash on restoring it to a wonderful family home and have fond memories of our time there....such as the year we sat down to Christmas lunch in the grand hallway with its sweeping staircase and the day we discovered a whole garden furniture set completely hidden, despite being stood on its end like a wheel, amongst the eight foot high brambles that had been allowed to over run the garden

Since we sold up, we have both regretted moving from the place where we were all so happy.....and where we all acquired the skills to restore future period homes - that (and the fact that we made a hefty profit) is the only consolation.

Hopefully our current house - our third attempt to find *the one* - will be our new *forever* home! I think it will be - it feels *right*, whereas the last two did not.....either way we can't keep throwing thousands away on removals :roll:
