That’s been my mentality this year. First year in the house. Previous owner kept doors shut and rads off in most rooms other than the bits they lived in.
Their bills showed they were paying less than what I was paying to heat my fully insulated, cavity walled end of terrace which was a 3rd of the size.
However, moved in in the June, bought humidstats, a lot of the walls felt clammy and by September I was spending a small fortune running 2 dehumidifiers all day everyday. I’ve added an extractor at the rear of the house up high in the kitchen and opened up a blocked vent at the front of the house.
As soon as temperatures started to drop I’ve maintained a consistent 17 - 19 degrees in all rooms, my combined gas and elec DD is now £320 per month but for now I have a nice dry house with relative humidity staying at around 40 - 50% depending on outside weather. I’m just hoping it stays closer to that by next September when outside air is warmer and carrying more moisture and it hasn’t all been a folly!
Longer term strategy is solar panels and battery (installation within the next 4 - 6 weeks) heat pump (provided the heat loss calcs are not too bad) and to start working towards lower flow temps to maintain a consistent temperature all year. A multi-year project for sure but want to see if you really can run an old place without the mortgage sized monthly payments on utilities!
