'Hollow sounding' plaster on walls-repairs needed

A quick check on page 1 will reveal the irony of this complaint. Almost as good as those who intervene in a thread to remind others not to be back-seat moderators. :lol:

I first found this forum because of 'that man', and reading his posts and following the link to his site taught me enough about damp to be able to solve most of the problems in our house, without the need for a damp-proof survey. I wonder if, by providing such detailed information for free online, he did himself out of business.
Having to trawl through a series of tirades against him in order to find the info I needed was nearly enough to persuade me not to come back to this forum. No doubt there were lots of good reasons why he attracted such vitriol, but for a new visitor to the site, landing in the middle of a slanging match can be off-putting.

I think somewhere I kept one or two of the pretty vile and obscene posts you maybe were unaware of. Those who only drop in and haven't much idea of the back story and some fairly major editing which at times used to go on here should, I suggest, keep out of things they maybe don't understand.

Unfortunately, the removal of one thread also meant a highly amusing post to said damp man by Gervase fell victim to the mods too; I have no doubt that should the need arise he can still have access to the large amounts of cow muck and a sprayer with which to wreak vengeance though.

But I wonder what the point of dragging up this past history is then, eh?

However, I think that we are all now a little wiser as to the motives and identity of 'Pennine Builder'.

Back on topic of hollow sounding plaster, that's why I have a big desk and bookcases, it stops me noticing the problem. I daren't tap some walls. Mostly caused by getting a damp proofing system put in which made sure that moisture stayed where it was.

So what would Gervase charge for approx 10 sq m of lime plaster finish on top of slightly wobbly (in places) render? Or Grimmers for that matter?

Plumber's mate-I can't put a desk on my staircase! Or could !?

But however much it is - it's too much.

Thanks to (and in perhaps, in spite) of this thread, I have finally finished my plaster repairs. I didn't use any plugs or buttons and so far the new stuff is much more firmly attached than before. As its the largest bit I've tackled so far I am quite pleased it hasn't all fallen off yet. Next hurdle will be paint, which must cover the new lime stuff and the gypsum skimmed bit and also a chunk of what we thought was just rough plaster and we now discover is (Oh Joy) Artex.

So to any novice posters, my advice is to skim through the banter and 'thread drift' (lovely phrase), the information is out there.

Absolutely! It's what this forum is all about. A bit of chat, a bit of banter, and nuggets of pure gold information liberally scattered therein.

OK - I will be shot at for this bit of bodgy advice - but I've done it and it works. (for isolated "blown plaster" patches)

1. Lightly drill a series of holes on the area to be fixed about 6mm wide and 10cm apart
2. Only drill past the surface plaster so you can feel the void behind it.
3. Get out your trusty foam gun (I can hear the screams now)
4. Gently squirt foam into holes one at a time (dont go mad!) the liquid foam wil migrate and pop up out of the next hole
5 Sort out the whole area to be done
6. Press a board against the patch and brace it if you can for 1/2 hour or so
7. take it all apart and prepare to be amazed. Rock solid wall!
8. Fill drill holes and sand
9. Paint.

I don't doubt many on this forum will dislike this comment and prefer a more hair shirt and suffering approach, but all this costs is a fiver for the foam.

The SPAB approach is PVA glue. Not of course recommended for large areas or important plaster.

That's more specialist stuff.

Nemesis/Lime would this work where the plaster is blown off the stone - some walls of ours seem to have had only one coat of plaster (it is really thin in areas - 3 mm) onto the stone and rubble walls? It just lifted off with my fingers in large sheets!

I think in situations where it's on stone, and so loose, then maybe it's not the answer. Is it all crumbly too?
