'Hollow sounding' plaster on walls-repairs needed

Well, I spotted PB browsing the forum just now and I presume he/she has read this, but no putting cash where gob is... or, indeed, any response to the query.

Evelyn, you didn't spot me as I was on a roof in Barnoldswick at the time. Never mind though.

I wasn't having a go at the post Lime made, just that last little dig at modern builders.

I'm alive today so I must be one of those modern builders who know nothing about lime, throw my fag butts down customers WC's and who just love Upvc.

This thread has gone the same way as most on this forum. Off topic by miles.

After all the years this forum has been running, is it any wonder that all it has really become is a jolly little chat forum for a few regular posters. Nothing to do with Period Property; are you all TOGS? The only thing missing from the old days is that man you loved to hate, the one who sold damp proofing surveys.

My comment was as much a dig at modern house owners as modern builders, perhaps more so.

Throwing fag ends down WC's is a relatively recent phenomena since cigarettes and WC's were not around when older properties were built.
Broken clay pipes appear to be the most common thing flung down IME.
However I feel sure the same facial expressions were exchanged between oldtime builders when the mistress of the house pushed past them saying that she was going to "christen" the midden for the first time.

And although it has always tended to be dominated by "a few regular posters" you must, surely, concede that most of the time they are generously giving up their time to provide lots of information, expertise and encouragement to anyone who posts a question. So please be generous and let them have their jolly little chats, even though some of the jokes get a bit laboured. I'm not a regular frequenter of forums but the few I've dipped into seem to follow much the same pattern. Must be something to do with human nature.

When a question is asked it usually gets answered. Nothing to do with Period Property? Really?

And it's always been a 'jolly little chat room' as well. Along the way I'd say a fair bit of information gets imparted.

No-one is making you read, or post. So clearly it's of your own free will.

I've visited a number of internet forums from time to time, covering a wide variety of topics. One one or two I'm a regular, on others an occasional visitor. Without exception, they're all dominated by a number of regulars, who tend to have a chat as well as giving answers to on-topic posters. But - as with this forum - a large number of people pop in, ask a question, get an answer and then disappear again for a while, or forever.

We're not single-function machines. We're people who - for the most part - tend to be interested in each other, as well as in our common interest of period buildings. So the conversation wanders, just as it does in life. But I defy you to point to any thread(s) whose core topic is ignored.

A considerable number of very knowledgeable and experienced people give copious information freely to others. Often it's information that in their professional lives they could charge considerable sums for.

I've benefitted enormously from information that I've gleaned on this forum. And I've frequently enjoyed a chat and a joke with other posters.

But if you don't feel this way, then I imagine we won't see much of you in the future.

I usually charge £200 a day (which is cheap!) to blather on about the sort of stuff I post here. I do it because I'm passionate about our built heritage, and because I know that I'm largely talking to other people who care. And also because I know I don't know the half of it, and that we can all still learn. If someone contradicts me and speaks from experience then I can learn from that.
And what's wrong with a bit of thread drift, innuendo and smut in between? I'd hate to go to the pub with someone who was as single-minded as some seem to be. :wink:
