Average mileage is around 19000km. Lets say fuel consumption is around 6l/100km giving a total of 1140 litres of fuel per year. Tax on fuel is currently £0.65 per litre so that is £741 per year on fuel tax. Road tax isn't insignificant but it is small relative to this.

Sorry for formatting problems, but a car paying £950 for first year car tax is significant and is not small compared to your £741.

Currently an Astra Twin top 1.8 is in the same bracket as a Range Rover 4.4 V8 petrol auto.

Yes, it was the revised/proposed figures I was thinking of, although I didn't have the details to hand. But again, why go to all the complexity of those bands when it's the actual fuel consumption that really counts, not the mpg you get from a particular vehicle - personal mileages will vary enormously.

Regarding rural living and car mileages, I agree there is little alternative to using a car but is it a good idea to start creating 'special cases'? There would be no end to it.

If we're typical of a lot of motorists, the rocketing price of petrol has certainly made a difference to the way we drive. The rev counter is now as important to us as the speedometer and although our car will go like a rocket we drive it very soberly indeed these days. Anything over 2000rpm is regarded as a wild extravagence.

Most pre' 73 vehicles can use unleaded without any problems. Even if there is an issue with pre ignition of valve seat wear, thesse are resolvable.

Often older vehicles can have quite good fuel economy ('cos they are slow!) but I agree re emissions generally. However, the number of old vehicles on the road (and the mileage they do) is really very small relatively - they are not the problem, but they may be an easty target. I hope not though. Went to York the other day the the Sir Nigel was sat in the station, steamed up and ready to go. A lovely looking thing. Unlike an Audi A4 which is a dull tank.

Anything over 2000rpm is regarded as a wild extravagence.

Low revs does not necessarily mean low fuel usage. Engines are most efficient at mid revs if working hard. Fair acceleration at mid revs before changing down when at speed is better than slow acceleration with low revs. A lot of people get it completely wrong when trying to drive economically. A good example is the ultra low fuel consumption vehicles. When they do 5000mpg+ runs, they accelerate hard and then coast for as long as possible before repeating. Not the way you would want to drive but it is the most fuel efficient way.

Well, the epic aeroscreen TR journey was completed last night from oop north to Kent in record time despite terrible weather, and as I type is it's crossing the chunnel.

So latest is - the TR conked out in Le Mans town, OH has hoofed it to the campsite /race track, camping gear transported, help included the Great and the Good of the TR Register (weell, the OH isn't too lowly either) but despite all - no sparks. It's p**ing down... my view is, enjoy the weekend, get brought home AA five star.

I think that the crew need a stiff drinky, and then some more...

I've told him - this is character building. At the moment, he's less than convinced.
