How about getting a butyl rubber pond liner. With your best origami technique, fold it out in your underground room, do the fold overs in the corners (could be a good idea to line the base with an old carpet) and finally fasten it around the top of the walls with 2" X 1" waterproofed battens nailed( or plugged and acrewed) with stainless steel fixings.

I'll fathom the mysteries of The Pit somehow, murdered wives, ghosts n' all.

It's not square, that's for sure, there are corners and strange projections. It's going to match that undercroft isn't it, with all the vaulting and curves? Above this structure, apparently, there was a summer room with pagoda type roof. That's according to the previous owner, there is no photographic or written evidence at all. But why would he make it up? We'd bought it before he told us that.

Or maybe I'm just getting over-excited again.

Is it possible to get collapsible tanks? I would like to do this with ours, but the access is not much more than 2ft by 18 inches.

Try using a digital camera with a self timer and flash and a tripod (or similar).
Attach it very firmly to something strong e.g. an upside down tripod, set the self timer then lower it into the pit.
10 seconds later you have a picture. If you're careful then a program such as Canon's Photostitch can put multiple images into a panoramic view of the tank.

Your suggestions are all ingenious.

The cleaner kindly sent me these pictures, but it doesn't really tell me very much. I can't even work out which bits they all are.
To properly photograph The Pit you'd need to go in and walk round its twists and turns.

I'm thinking of buying one of those very long bendy noodles you see in swimming pools and sellotaping my mobile phone onto it whilst it's in videoing mode, then shoving it down deep and round the corner.

Thanks for all the tank lining ideas. I hadn't realised such things were readily available. I've already been inside our rainwater cistern, before thinking about safety issues, but there were frogs living at the bottom, which must be a good sign.

Indeed, though I've had a few in my throat. Fortunately the house was converted to mains, but I'd like to use the tank for storing water for the garden. At the moment it never gets more than an inch or two deep before draining away.
