Strange how BT works. When told I couldn't have Broadband, no way, I asked them to let me know when it would ever be available for me. (Cue pathetic sigh.) They installed it within a week. No shower curtain or pole needed to make it work, either.

BT are indeed a mystery.
We moved into a house that had had broadband before us. We brought our old number with us as we were only moving 400 yds up the road (from where we were too far from the exchange to get broadband).
2 weeks of listening to Greensleeves on hold to BT later, and they still couldn't put broadband back on the line. Apparently we still lived too far away from the exchange, despite the fact that the previous owners had it working!
Then I hit upon the idea of asking for the old number to be reinstated. It was, and I had broadband before the end of the day! I may not fully understand all of this pixie and elf-powered technology stuff, but surely it is the same line just a different number allocated to it??!!
Anyway, it now says that the pixies are much fitter than they were and I could upgrade (for £6 per month less) from 512k broadband to 2mb. Is it worth doing this? I'm fearful if BT touch the line, that they'll knock all the fairy dust off it and I'll become too far away from the exchane again.

Remember that quoted broadband speeds are always "up to....". Just because your account is nominally 2Mbps, that doesn't mean you'll get that speed. My broadband account is nominally 4Mbps, but the download speed I get varies from about 1.5Mbps down to a meagre 300kbps.FamilyWiggs said:

I should ask BT to tell you honestly what speed they think you'll get if you upgrade. On the other hand, if the upgrade is going to cost you £6/mth less... why worry?

Absolutely. The first test I ran returned a result of 0.6Mbps, the second test (immediately following the first) gave a result of 2Mbps.
You really need to run such tests a few times to get an idea of your average line speed.

Here's (IMO) the best broadband speed test utility. It's a free download. It tests in a variety of ways - uploads, downloads, pings and so on to various parts of the world.
