Having a Library Built?

I do know what you mean Moo. I was overcome by a cleaning fit on Sunday and moved the (very) heavy range cooker to clean under it - first time in (ahem) 4 years. Or maybe longer - the previous owners left the cooker behind.

But then afterwards I thought what about all those with an Aga, or similar cast iron range? They must never move, especially if plumbed in. Ours is a range cooker but a "modern" one, so not impossible to move.

And as I pushed the cooker back, I thought "There - that looks exactly the same as it did before". Not exactly what you'd call job satisfaction.

Lovely looking floor. I can't help with the proposed shelving but I've been reading this thread with interest as I have plans (well, intentions would be more accurate at this stage) for a large wall of bookshelves once we move out of the building phase and into decoration. As ever, the posted photos have been very interesting and look rather fabulous. One day, one day!

I also had a nosey peek at benmc's other photos and it looks as if there's some interesting home automation stuff being installed as well.

I am starting to think I could build them myself out of 18mm Birch faced plywood.

My new kitchen is made from 18mm ply and is solid.

Would also need more tools to do this!

Hi Ben, it might be worth you looking at www.jali.co.uk, I was recently looking at this website as I want a cabinet making for my dolls house to stand on, they allow you to design your own products and it gives an immediate cost, everything appears to be made from MDF. Its a useful design tool even if you don't purchase from them, there are various designs which you can alter to your own requirements.

Yes 100%. Converted Church with modern day features. So all of the speakers etc and mounted in the ceiling leaving clean walls and rooms.

All of the cabling terminates in the loft/mezzanine.

We're having some large timber bookshelves built into our multipurpose guest bedroom/study/laundry-drying room. Because the back of the house is lower than the front, there are 5 wide stairs down into the room so it was a wasted space calling out for a mini-library! So the shelves will be built going down the stairs if you see what I mean - luckily the carpenter's used to our wobbly walls... Now I need to summon up the energy to decorate the room before he arrives the week after next and I'm not well this week So I think it'll be a case of decorating a wall a day and working around the chaos of the room, sitting down for rests and demanding regular tea and biscuits from Mr Juju. Luckily the room has a low ceiling so I won't need to go up ladders and I'm not bothering to paint the ceiling as it's in good nick and was probably decorated by the previous owners only a few years ago. I'll post some before and after piccies at a later date!

For those interested in decorative schemes, I'm using F&B Pale Powder on the main walls, and Light Blue on the chimney breast - both of which look grey-green not remotely blue, which is fine as I wanted a muted slightly Scandinavian look... Every colour I try in this house never looks anything like it does on the chart - we must have weird light or something as I didn't have that in my previous house! The room already has nice wooden venetian blinds and red accessories.

I'm so sorry to hear that Mr JJ has broken both arms. At least, that's what I'm assuming, as you are apparently having to undertake the decoration, in spite your current state of health.

(I think that nice Mr JJ may never forgive me for that .... :wink: )

Oops I made it sound like I was having to do all the work whilst he just put the kettle on occasionally and sat around reading the weekend papers! That's probably what he thinks he is doing this weekend (he's away at the moment).Actually he will be on furniture-moving and carpet tearing up duty and I also have a long list of jobs for him elsewhere in the house and garden. Mr JJ has many strengths and talents but sadly precision painting is not one of them ... No, I shall carry on despite ill-health - not that I'm complaining you understand.

I had these built recently by The Hungerford Bookcase Company:

Not sure what you call expensive, but these were c£10K for c.11 linear meters, up to a height of 9 feet (there is more than what is shown in these pics). The corners added a fair bit on - am sure straight runs would be cheaper. The workmanship is really good - it took them a couple of days to fit (they were made off site). Would really recommend them.

That's a wonderful library, but judging by the ferociously defensive finials, the Windham family obviously nurtured a deep fear of thieves breaking into the room through the ceiling.
