JohnB, you remind me of my younger self. Our van was pretty basic, my then boyfriend wore a dressing gown (70s, wild colours) most of the time and we washed clothes in the sinks in public loos. (We washed ourselves in lakes and rivers, I have photos of me in lakes and rivers up and down the entire country) My clothes came from jumble sales, I'd bin them when they got really filthy. In the winter the condensation on the inside froze, and my long hair would freeze to the sides of the vehicle and have to be peeled off in the morning.

Is it acceptable to drive in a small rural town after half a bottle of wine with one headlamp? Hmmm, police officers won't be able to see batting eyelashes in dark.

Didn't realise you were a hippy when younger, although I am sure you can't be classed as old by most on this forum.

I do it in some luxury. I've got a kitchen, fridge, loo, shower, stereo, internet access, sat nav. There's a hand operated washing machine in the trailer. In winter I stay on sites with electric hookup (and a laundry!), so I have heating. But then I'm living my life in the wrong order. In my late teens and twenties I was wearing a suit and sitting in an office. I've had to wait until my fifties to drop out . If I could drag a few acres of land around with me, I'd stay in the van and not bother buying a house :lol:.

I don't risk drinking that much and driving though!

i have to say i really enjoyed being a hippie , i still wait until the bitter end before i cut my hair today , i usually end up with a 70's clint eastwood do before i take the plunge .

I was tempted to buy a narrowboat last year, but the rather drastic cut in interest rates meant I had to give up on that idea, and think about settling down

Boats are a hole in the water to throw your money in,Ratty got it right and sailing dinghys are ok but my boat has a thundering great petrol engine and "giving it a bit of stick"to get it on the plane is addictive but with river licences,mooring fees,boat saftey certs,insurance etc they still cost lots of money without moving,phil.
