Double glazing in Listed Building

I make the maths:

300mm x 350mm = 1m2 per window.

1m2 costs £200 to £350.

And you want 300 of them.... So that's £60k to £105k...

300m2 of glazing sounds quite a lot for a house... Stating the obvious that's the equivalent of a window 17.5 metres square. No wonder you want it double glazed!

EDIT: Ignore me. I'm out by a factor of three. Yep, £20-35k is what you're looking at... schoolboy error, square cm is not the same as cm squared!

kind of. I agree that a 300 x 350 panel is around 0.1m^2, but there is a minimum charge for a double glazed panel, I can't remember what it was when I bought some, but I have a feeling that the cost is the same per panel up to around 0.5m^2 or there or thereabouts.

The minimum charge is spec'd above - 0.3m2, and this is reflected in the calc's.

Hi

I have used slimlite glass. The issue is not the thickness. It is hiding the spacers that hold the two pieces of glass apart. The bit I have on my desk has a 5mm spacer compared to a 10mm minimum in cheap DG units. It means that it can be used with traditional 16mm glazing bar without seeing the spacer. It is heavier so may need more weight. I tend to agree it in situations like this one or in later extensions. Here is a photo



If you have serious money to spend, you can go one stage further. Pilkington Spacia Glass is double glazed but only as thick as normal glass. It has a 0.3mm gap but it is a vacuum which eliminates any conduction and convection. The glass is held apart by micro dots. It has to be custom made to size and is hugely expensive but hopefully it will get cheaper so that it can be used in

although spacia has the seal in the corner of the pane that is in my opinion visually obtrusive. if they can address this, then it will be the solution to this age old problem.

I suggest a read of appeal decision - Appeal ref: APP/E3525/E/2161466 3, College Street, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 1NH - this demonstrates that these cases are never clear cut.

Thanks. I read this with much interest. And, it makes sense to me. Our building is listed in part due to its historic significance: designed and built by a noteable Victorian architect for his own occupation. This historical context may make a case for reverting back to the original single glazed windows, rather than sensitively upgrading. And, this historical context will likely increase over time. Food for thought, at least.

I think that appeal decision to uphold the refusal of LB consent is a little perverse. If the replacements were much more in keeping with the surviving traditional windows of the building/street, and the present installations were inappropriate 20th C inserts, isn’t the Inspector cutting their nose off to spite their face? It seems it’s the building, the street and the owners that lose out here (plus the windows were round the back).
