Maybe it's because I'm from Norfolk, I never think of anywhere in East Anglia as being either North or South.

Maybe I should have said mostly in the South! There are a few regional chains of "posh" supermarkets though, such as Booths, which I'm sure is only in the North. (At least I've never seen one south of Knutsford!)

My word, someone who's heard of the place! Yes, the nickname is indeed to do with origins. No golfballs there in my day - I left in about 1982. As kids, the air base was purely housing, and storage in the old hangars. The runway (which was only ever grass strip) had long since been returned to farmland. You could wander round the airbase at will - and we did, including going down inside the old WW2 underground shelters, which looking back was probably very dangerous!

The golfballs, for anyone who is wondering what on earth we are going on about, are some giant domes that look like golf balls on a US air base in a very rural part of Norfolk. It's some sort of radio-listening post I believe, I don't know much about it.

I think a large part of the charm of East Anglia is exactly because you can't pass through it on the way to anywhere, except perhaps Felixstowe. It leads to an altogether slower pace of life, in my opinion. People just don't seem to be in such a rush.

Actually, I should really have called myself "Hockwold-cum-Wilton" as that is actually where I was born, which you must also drive through if you've seen the golf balls. But seeing as how we moved the couple of miles to Feltwell when I was a nipper, and it rolls off the tongue a little easier, I'll stick with Feltwell!
