I have the grant application forms and am planning to put the max £2000 grant toward re-doing the lead on the porch. Better get that application in quick before the Iceland chill puts a stop to grants.

I like the look of that decorator in the victorian paint guide, I bet the fashion police would have something to say about a mustaches like that need LBC! Does he have longer arms than normal people?

Case law (famously, the yellow door in Bath's Royal Crescent) generally suggests that painting the doors and windows of a listed building a different colour does not require consent, regardless of what Thanet Council might think.

Our CO told me (a few years ago) that he would like to be involved if we decided to change the colour of our currently Suffolk Pink house to "something adventurous". But that a change to something else "conservative" wouldn't bother him.

But Thanet's CO is one of the good guys, and yellow is not a nice door colour really. Esp for the Royal Crescent.

EXTERIOR DECORATION

Exterior woodwork was usually decorated in a green colour - one of the Bronze Greens or Brunswick Greens - to blend in with foliage and in the case of the Bronze Greens to resemble weathered bronze. Purple Brown was also used for exterior woodwork - one contemporary specification for a small house calls for the front door to be painted green and the windows Purple Brown.

Exterior masonry - or stucco - was generally painted in imitation of local stone in colours such as Buff and Yellow Ochre, Stone and Dark Stone... bare brickwork would never, and should never, be painted

I do like the "Established since 1939" - that "since" is very ambiguous. I was "born since 1939".

Here's my pennorth, back to the original question, as no-one else has proposed what was my first (and I thought obvious) idea.

The dark green paint looks good on the windows, but much too gloomy applied all over the portico and columns too. Why not just do the front door itself in dark green, and the porch & pillars in the off white "stone" effect, as they are presumably meant to look like stone anyway - or have I proposed a conservation solecism?

I did read a wise comment somewhere that said when painting a Georgian terrace, the most important thing was for it to be "polite" and to be harmonious with one's street, even if that did mean your railings were black and your woodwork white.

Clearly not quite the same for your posh Vic Villa but a good point I thought.

I'd agree - painting things that are (or are meant to represent) stone in stone colour seems a good idea.

Special thanks to nemisis. I do agree that the Thanet Conservation Officer and Conservation Architect are "the good guys".

I emailed the pictures to the CO

"...I would also welcome the colour changes, as the white there currently is somewhat harsh. Certainly the greens give it a lot more charm"

So It looks like it would get permission. blue, red, green. dunno. I'll get some samples.
Wife likes a dark plum colour.
We both like Hague blue.
