You can keep your makeshift looking top of the leylandii, and won't make me regret for a minute my first ownership of a beautiful Colorado fir, or the £65 to that lovely family at Castle Bytham, or the chat with the grower of that fir, who said it took a number of years, and he got no profit from it at all, but did it because the tree was beautiful. And I saw the place where they grew as well, and sometimes you can't put a price on really nice experiences.

Leylandii have no place in a garden, let alone a house. In a spacious arboretum perhaps, near a grove of Wellingtonia, but nowhere else thank you.

Did you know that 90% of the world supply of Christmas tree seed comes from Georgian forests and is gathered by exploited child and adult workers who have no safety equipment and regularly suffer serious injury falling off trees? I dont know if there are any fair trade Xmas trees available in the UK, but if there are I would like to buy one next year.

Gosh - I didn't realise that. Neither did I know that you have to climb the tree to get the seeds.

Makes me glad that we're still using the great big artificial one that we bought twenty years ago.

Doesn't feel nice, does it? But it's true what they say; what goes around, comes around. That's why it's always better to be nice to people.

£47 for an 8ft Norway spruce? You should be able to get ten metres of four by three spruce for less than that. And with no bark!

Anyway, for what it's worth, I fired up my trusty old period tractor today and headed off into the frosty wilderness to relieve a suitable fir of 8-feet of the finest-looking Christmassy thing I could find. It's now in the capable custody of Mrs FF, who is decorating it to within an inch of it's life. Photos to follow in due course.

We are off to cut down a tree in 15 minutes, well sherry and mince pies with the neighbours first and then a little sawing, so pictures should be on hand tomorrow!!

Well remembered. No measuring tape this year but I was mindful of last year's exuberance and, amazingly, when installed it was a mere couple of inches from the ceiling. So, less of a bush this year and more like a proper tree.
