Christmas trees

Given that there's a very, very, very remote possibility of us being in the house for Christmas (after 14 years in my 2 bedroomed flat on wheels :lol: ), I'm starting to think about the purchase of a real Christmas tree!! :shock:

I'd like a 12' Colorado Blue Spruce but I can't find anywhere online to buy one. Does anyone have any ideas of where I could get one, please?

I don't really know what such a thing looks like. All I know is that anything apart from the classic needle-droppers seem to cost a small fortune, so I go out and lop a bit off one of our piney-looking trees The trouble is, it's difficult to judge the right size when cutting one down . . . .

. . . . and that's after trimming it further to get it indoors.

It's very tempting to be a smart-arse and suggest trying a Colorado Blue Spruce forest.

Do you need to be so specific? Our local sawmill branches out ( :roll: ) each year and sells a variety of christmas trees in December. I know that the Forestry Commission sells them from many of their sites. I'm sure somewhere online sells them but it seems to still largely be a local enterprise, due to the difficulty in delivery I suppose.

Well, I do rather like them and the colour will go so well in my living room. And, apparently, they smell lovely, too You might be right about the delivery problem. I'll have a better scout around locally. I just hate shopping and, by habit, look on t'internet before anywhere else

Since Ashridge are a tree specialist - rather than someone just doing Christmas trees - you have a better chance of a good tree.

Only downside: you may have to wait til 2020 before you get it to grow as big as the one in the pic :lol:
- on the positive side , it gives you plenty of room for a "project over-run" :roll: and, at only 45cm high you could even have it in a caravan without lopping the top off !

We have one in our garden
Bought it from a Tesco petrol station boxing day 6 years ago and planted it at our "now" house, but at the time we were still in process of buying.
It was rooted in a pot and was £1.99 instead of £9.99, we bought that one and 3 normal spruce trees, one died and the others are doing well, trees which were only 2' are now a good 5'

No use to you as we aren't selling, but thought I'd say it does look nice.

Jaqy - we just paid a visit to a very sweet family business in Castle Bytham, "Snowbird", and came back with a lovely Colorado White fir, a really dense fluffy tree with an amazing smell - not cheap at £65 (7.5ft) but really unusual and rather vast in its proportions - he said he had one or two more.

The other trees were very nice too.

This is really kind of you, Joce; thank you However, I fear that the hope of being in for Christmas is fading fast. The locksmith still hasn't finished the locks, we have some bits of plastering to do, bits of plumbing and a massive clean down :roll: If we're extremely lucky, we may just do it but I'm not holding my breath! I may just have to come down and drool over yours instead

I don't think that's expensive - provided the price includes a return flight to Colorado to choose your own tree.

The nearby street market stall which sells front door decorations sports my all time favorite example of grocers' spelling: REEF 'S. Seeing it is almost enough to lift me out of my traditional December misanthropy.

I shouldn't abandon your misanthropy entirely. It has been my experience that an individual's inability to spell or punctuate the English language does not necessarily imply his/her essential trustworthiness. :wink:

Being tight I would ask in your local builders merchant/builders pub where they get theirs - after all that time they should know your face.
Last years 12' tree was cut down on a closed nursery by my mate who runs a building company so owns a chainsaw and knows everyone - it was loaded on his trailer and delivered by his labourers along with his and his Dad's - they both have barn conversions so small trees aren't an option.
It was expensive though, I think I gave him a tenner
