Clearly a generous bunch down in Cornwall - They charge for that round here, or certainly did a while ago. Good tip though, well worth anyone checking where they are.

Another example of an inconsistent approach by different authorities!

Cornwall Council will charge you nicely if you go into their offices and ask for a location map. No problem there. The point is that the information is also available for free online - they just don't tell you this.

Interesting - I'll have a hunt through my authority's site (Shropshire County Council doesn't cover all of errr, the county of Shropshire......), see what I can find.

On BBC news today - Crewkerne becomes the first place to charge residents to visit recycling centres on a per visit basis. Apparently this is to avoid the centres having to close, which was the alternative. I bet this initiative spreads to other authorities fairly quickly.

I wonder if the increase in flytipping that results will cost more to clean up than they make from the entrance charges? Ohh, of course, so long as they flytip on private land it won't cost the Council a penny :evil:

That's one of the reasons why you'll find your plumbers, electricians and other contractors so keen to leave their waste behind. It really irked me but not as much as their fondness for putting rotting food waste and off milk containers into the skips. I kept telling them to put all food waste in the wheelie bin where it would be removed rather than putting things into the skip and then discovering you'd trodden in something grim - at least I didn't see any vermin.

One of my guys was working on his own renovation and told me he got so tired of the problems that he simply dug a pit in part of his property - filled it and covered it over again, hardly the best solution but fewer landfill miles I guess?

1x100litre bag of home improvement waste per week I'm allowed to take for free is pointless and as it can't contain any gypsm it doesn't help. I don't mind paying for a skip when I can fill it but there seems to be a middle ground that isn't served at all.

And quite right, too. It's also encumbent upon you to check that your milk supplier doesn't starve his cows and your postman doesn't beat his wife.

Fair point, Skier, about the licencing requirement. I suppose it makes some sense. Though I recall a conversation with a builder last year complaining that it's now technically illegal for him to take home offcuts of wood for kindling unless he has a commercial waste licence and he was concerned that he could find himself in big trouble if the police stopped his van on the way home from a job and found half a bag of cement and a bunch of offcuts in the back - though it would be interesting to know the legal definition of 'waste' in this context.

immediately at his own cost is an offence. He complains and is arrested for 
environmental pollution, breach of the peace and invoiced £12,000 plus VAT for
 safe disposal costs by a regulated government contractor.

Your assignment: How many times is the logger going to have to be arrested and
fined before he realises that he is never going to make £20 profit by hard

buy a new lorry because his bank has spent all his and their money on a derivative of securities debt related to sub-prime mortgages in Detroit and lost the lot, with only some government money left to pay a few million-pound bonuses to their senior directors and the traders who made the biggest losses.
The logger struggles to pay the £1,200 road tax on his old lorry.. However, as 
it was built in the 1970s it no longer meets the emissions regulations and he is 
forced to scrap it.
 Some Bulgarian loggers buy the lorry from the scrap merchant and put it back on
the road. They undercut everyone on price for haulage and send their cash back 
home, while claiming unemployment for themselves and their relatives. If
 questioned they speak no English and it is easier to deport them at the
 governments expense. Following their holiday back home they return to the UK
 with different names and fresh girls and start again. The logger protests, is 
accused of being a bigoted racist and as his name is on the side of his old 
lorry he is forced to pay £1,500 registration fees as a gang master.


The Government borrows more money to pay more to the bankers as bonuses are not 
cheap. The parliamentarians feel they are missing out and claim the difference 
on expenses and allowances.

Recycling! Watched a little telly yesterday morning (I know I should have been in the workshop!) on the breakfast prog it showed somerset charging to use their recycling centers and folks turning round and taking their "stuff" home (I hope!),after this was a police program where they were arresting crooks for stealing from recycling centers!one hardened criminal had stolen a bed for his cat!.I often use the A46 in leicestershire where the laybys seem to be filling up with rubbish,some is trade (piles of tyres etc) but mostly the odd telly/bag of garden rubbish.It must cost to remove all this flytipping,would it not be cheaper to make the tips/recycling centers easier to use and closer to centers of population (my nearest one is 12 miles away,a 24 mile round trip) so costs in fuel and time and no guarantee it will be open or they will find a reason to turn you away (we say your trailers is too big/our skips are full etc)phil.

Oxfordshire County council's latest wheeze on all this is that....
They are going to close all the smaller recycling stations and build one mega one which we will have to drive across oxfordshire to to deposit our waste.
Oxford City council have reacted with fury to this - they know the likely end result!

Sounds like another example of the "Washington monument syndrome" process. You are faced with cuts so instead of cutting those things which no one wants you instead cut the thing everyone wants/appreciates and then shrug your shoulders at the mega row it provokes and blame those cutting the money for the problem.....whereupon the council no doubt hope that more money can be "found" from central government "too keep open the tips" you understand: Alson known as "create a crisis management"

Soon be cheaper to pay £50 to a load of pikeys to fly tip it for you.

Our local recycling centre no longer accepts....

More than 1 bag of DIY waste per week

We opened a fireplace and had several bags of bricks - not enough for a skip but more than the 1 bag per week we were allowed. We resorted to making 5 separate trips (my parents were staying with us) in order to get rid of the bricks.

Does anyone know if there is anything preventing a householder from burying waste as suggested?

My recycling center refused to take empty paint cans and told me to double bag them and put them in my wheely bin,I did this and they were left without any explaination so they went back in the bin now at the bottom and covered them with a fortnights rubbish! they then were collected!

Well, our recycling centre gave me a free 12 visit or one year permit for the huge trailer. They have a skip or box for EVERY conceivable item. Everytime I go there is an extra skip. There used to be a plastics skip but now it is hard plastic or soft plastic.

There is a plasterboard skip. The only thing we can't take is asbestos, we have to bag it and take it about 4 miles further.

They did say on the permit letter that if you are doing a big house renovation we should get a skip.

The trailer is not allowed on sundays as it is too busy.

Oh and there is one skip that is for "costly landfill" which we all try not to use but they make you put duvets, mattresses and polystyrene in it.

Well, you've all made me realise that (with the exception of Schoolmarm) we are quite lucky then! Like Schoolmarm, I can get rid of pretty much anything at the local centre, which is about 2 miles away - the only exceptions being asbestos and paint where I have to go the landfill site itself, about 8 miles away. I can use my trailer when I want and deposit as much as I want, just needing a (free) trailer permit each time I go, which I can apply for in advance in batches. By the sound of it, the day when this gets taken away will come - but at the moment they seem to be adding to the facilities, there's a new skip for something each time I go.

The authority has just upped what they'll take for kerbside recycling as well, which is great - it's now garden waste, cardboard, paper, cans (inc aerosols), plastics, glass and batteries - and they are considering food waste. The only thing we recycle every day now which has to go to the special skip at the tip is drinks cartons. Of course you still get locals who moan about the collections being alternated so the non-recycling bin only gets emptied every other week.

It is so stupid if they refuse to take certain items at the recycling sites - what do they think people are going to do with them? With most areas having wheelie bins now they'll just get shoved in the wheelie bins. Mine is about twice as large as we need for our domestic rubbish, so there's plenty of room for "extras" if I wanted to.

It is so stupid if they refuse to take certain items at the recycling sites - what do they think people are going to do with them?

When our glorious leaders chose to subcontact waste collection and the recycling centres to different companies this became "someone elses problem" in both directions.

I wrote a letter to my local MP when I discovered that May Gurney (sp?) had taken over the local waste recycling centre and refused to allow someone to take a children's bike which was being taken out of the boot of a car at the time - reported on my local Freegle group. His (useless) response was that MG were planning on setting up volunteers to check reusable items for safety then offer them for sale to the public. So you get to volunteer to sort other people's trash so the council and subcontractors can profit? The bike in question went into the metal skip and was probably chipped, shipped to china to be turned back into products to be imported here.

Pford75 - in Broadland we are allowed to put aerosols in our grey recycling wheelie bin -perhaps you can too?
