I always put on my chainsawing hard hat and visor when using my circular table saw, I've had a small piece of wood fly by my head once.

Hi F-W, I do not have a tip guard and did not know about them but will now get one.I do not think my accident was caused by tip contact but will now be extra careful (thats if the wife does not put my saws on freecycle!) up early,no breakfast,have a thirty mile trip to the derby hospital where they have a "hand" unit,getting the hang of this one finger keyboard typing! phil.

hopsitals are pretty good at this kind of thing so i am sure you will be in safe hands , just dont eat the food.

Oh I dont know,after the(very rough) op they gave me a cup of (out of a machine)coffee and three custard cream biscuits,they were probably quite nice but I was unable to unwrap them with one hand!

Yes thanks, the op done under local,rough,lots of banging and power tool noises,but no real pain yet(until the anasthetic wears off!) got a wire sticking out of the end! thanks for the good wishes,will try not to be a pratt in future! phil. :roll:

Sorry to hear you got a bit of a mauling, doesn't mean thet didn't do a good job though. I ended up with huge bruises when my wrist was fixed, but it mended very nicely. They obviously had you signed up for the free anger management programme by mistake or they wouldn't have teased you with the biscuits. Good that your back with us

Yes thanks,they gave me"strong painkillers" and "very strong painkillers" but I do not have much pain at all! how are you re the earthquake? cheers,phil.

If you don't feel the need to take the drugs that's great. I'm in London at the mo, so well clear of the Japan earthquake. Think Singapore OK because of where other land masses are.

I spent some years in close dealings with the Forestry Commission. They have a saying:

There is no such thing as a SLIGHT accident with a chainsaw.

A sentence that should be drummed into anyone who is contemplating the use of one of these very dangerous tools.

The CAA (Civil Aviation authority) were at one point giving out a triangle shaped plastic windscreen di-cers/scrapers freebie (doubled up as a coffee mug coaster) with the memorable phrase on it "A fatal accident only occurs once during a lifetime"

Thanks for the message but it was not rotten luck it was incompetance!,I am really angry with myself,with the dressing/sling I am unable to get on with the project I was doing (cutting down willows at the end of the garden to build a slipway into the trent) I have to be driven around and my wife is having to cut my food up! all because I did not put my gloves on.Chainsaw owners-do not be a pratt like me,ALWAYS use your protective gear!rant over.

Even in really cold weather Phil I take gloves off to use machinery. I just can't get the "feel" of the beast in gloves. I even hate wearing latex gloves when working on cars/engines.

Are chainsaw gloves any better?

Not really but you cannot use chainsaws at all with no fingers!
