At our local art school (now a University College - there's progress) a notice was pinned up by the Elf'nsafety Police in the corridor outside the sculpture department.
It had come to their notice that some of the students were using clay and that when it dried it created a lot of dust. The notice pointed out the (very real) dangers of said dust and asked the students to take steps to eliminate this hazard.
By using plasticine.

We've just been told at work we can no longer have drawing pins as they are a health and safety hazard. Just for a laugh, I mentioned to the powers-that-be that we wouldn't be able to use blutac instead as it is a choking hazard - they believed me!Cue much head-scratching about how we can secure papers to notice boards etc..... Honestly, you couldn't make it up,. :roll:

Do H&S people ever apply any common sense to these 'potential hazards' I wonder? Almost everything is potentially hazardous but surely it's appropriate to take into account the history of actual injuries. Yes, drawing pins are a potential hazard but how many actual injuries have ever been caused by drawing pins?
I read a news story recently about school uniforms moving over to 'clip-on' ties because anything ties around the neck is a 'potential choking hazard'. Well, I suppose it is but, again, how many actual injuries have ever occurred? The world is a hazardous place and normal people manage to just live with it.

My partner works in insurance and told me that most of these supposed H&S clampdowns are nothing to do with the the Health and Safety Executive (et al) and are all to do with supposed risk mitigation by middle management with very little basis in real problems. Insurance companies don't require the levels of idiot proofing we're talking about here as they are in the business of assessing and quantifying risk, they know the things that are actually dangerous and things that aren't.
Dangerous things...roads, swimming pools, smoking, asbestos...
Not Dangerous things...drawing pins, dust sheets, clay, crayons...
As a parent of a 5 year old I seem to spend a lot of time trying to convince other people that there are acceptable levels of risk; that teaching your kids to assess and respond to potential danger is a life skill and never letting them out of your sight will handicap their ability to function as adults. Everyday I walk my kid to school and make her decide when it's safe to cross the street, she's more likely to be knocked down by a car crossing the street than she is to be abducted by a stranger, accidentally strangled or fall to her death from a ground floor window. Out of 100 kids at the village school fewer than 15 walk each day and none between 4-11 walk unaccompanied - how will these kids survive on their own?

My son (12 at the time) has great respect for the dangers of trampolines after falling off one and breaking his arm. Nothing like learning from experience!
Mind you, I notice that they all seem to have safety netting around them these days so perhaps the H&S brigade have 'done' trampolines.

What was the most sensles rule you broke today? I carried a hot drink up some stairs, without scalding myself, slipping or self-combusting, in flagrant disregard of the Elfin Safety notice at the bottom.

Re: floors. The bedroom above my sitting room is incredibly noisy even when unoccupied. I presume the different layers of floor relate to the different years that the house was renovated/extended.
1780/90 ish, elm boards; on top of these 1820 pitch pine; 1981 square fibre boards covered with underlay and then carpet.
When the room is occupied, it sounds like a herd of elephants up there. Even unoccupied, the boards expand and contract against each other and sound as if someone is walking about up there.
I would really like to go back to the elm boards, but they (although having been treated) are not in good condition around the edges.
Brian (late husband) said no gentleman would wear anything except a self tie tie.
As the chair of Recreation & Open Spaces on my local council I come into direct contact with Elf'n Safety (whoever he/she is). We regularly have H&S round to inspect areas we are responsible for. The last time he came up with a refreshing comment. "If the play areas are too safe there is no fun in them for the children." The policy for play equipment nowadays is to go for a natural environment; boulders, tree-like climbing experiences, banks they can roll down. Replicating days when it was felt safe for children to use the local countryside as a play area. Trees, banks, streams, large rocks,meadows.
