Carpet versus floorboards, again

Boards and rugs for me too. My hay fever is now properly confined to the summer now we have boards in the bedroom, lovely waxed oak and all with LBC. I used to have all year round rhinitis, due presumably to dust.
And I do the same amount of cleaning too.
We have some insulation laid below which reduced the chilly breezes nicely.

I bet that is full of nastyness, I would go for a slightly less toxic option such as OSMO as it gives a much more natural finish and comes in matt or satin CHRIS

I thin it out so it soaks in and leaves a more natural finish, I wouldnt use it on anything old, just sealing up new boards.

Ah- my picture was misleading, the skirting is still in its old paint so I'm afraid I don't know what it is. It's a lovely colour but shiny unfortunately.

The colour of the F&B tin in the photo is not dissimilar though: it's "Skylight". I'll post pics when it's all done.

Yes.

I'm with Jocelyn. Bare boards may be frait-fully fashionable, but I reckon the warmth, cosiness, ease-of-care and practicality of a fitted carpet is essential - particularly in a bedroom, where you're likely to be bare-foot for a fair amount of the time.

Huh. Don't get me started on hardship, or you'll be bored rigid with tales of our four years in a 30ft caravan with two children, two dogs and an extremely fecund pair of guinea pigs.

That were after our 20 years in a shoe-box in't middle of t' M1.

We've earned our fitted carpets, believe me.

Hardship? Pah! I lived on Marmite sandwiches, wore rags and feathers from Salvation Army counters, bathed in icy lakes in winter.

But seriously though, who is the winner of the PPUK hardship contest? I'd like to nominate MdB, who is forced to live in a tent in his own bedroom.

Whoooaa and here is me stressing about living in a house that has its roof is structurally sound and just needs repointing.. but is a complete mess inside with 4 kids and a cat and a dog...

My vote is for whoever it was that spent 11+ years in a caravan. We only lasted 9 months in the caravan before being forced out due to the water in the dog bowl freezing. Living in the tent in the living room is luxury in comparison. (Our neighbours don't currently have hot water or much of kitchen so they are worth a vote too!)

At the end of a memorable November I returned home from t'hospital with my second baby anticipating a lovely extended kitchen. Instead I found a dusty shell, with the old sink and (functioning) water-pipes in the middle of the room and a bucket under the drain hole. The cooker was still connected but everything else had been piled into the breakfast room. There was, of course, no heating. Neither was there a door between the kitchen and breakfast room, so the dust was able to be very even-handed and spread itself equally over both rooms.
The builder didn't reappear until well after Christmas having, we subsequently learned, spent the festive season at Her Majesty's pleasure.

Nothing to compete with those years huddled in a caravan, but it was an interesting experience.

Having been on the SPAB weekend where one of the things they tell you is not to get pregnant and then hope to get all your building work done before you have the baby, I am now convinced that I will knock half the house down, move into a caravan and then discover that I am 6 months pregnant. :wink: Oh well, my aunt has cheerily said that if it comes to it, we can move back home into my old bedroom at any time (10 mins away) - though if I did come with small and screaming baby in tow, the offer might be withdrawn.

Oh how disappointing! At least your baby could start good and early on the toughening up process.

It's all madness though, really, we've left the flat I spent 7 years tarting and titivating, and now my tenant (who has no appreciation of such things), can gaze at my silk curtains, bespoke kitchen and bathroom, and landscaped gardens complete with koi carp. He can even press a button and have remote control heating. :mrgreen:

Whilst we live in a certain degree of squalor and start again.

And I have no doubt that when Beacon Cottage is done we'll start again. :|

More tales of woe and hardship, please, it cheers me up.
