Him/Her* Upstairs must be getting on a bit by now. All new houses to have wide staircases for stairlift adaptation and a downstairs bathroom. If developers were interested in reflected glory and the life hereafter we wouldn't need such government intervention. (Sorry, bit off topic - this is the blood cooling thread.)

Excuse me for being a tad cynical, but isn't this latest Government announcement just another useless 'initiative' designed to suggest they are actually doing something useful?

I wonder how many new houses are built without a downstairs 'bathroom' these days anyway (i.e. would a cloakroom qualify as a bathroom? - what's the Government definition of a bathroom?). And stairlifts have been advertised for as long as I can remember so it's a reasonable conclusion that staircases are already wide enough for such adaptation.

What next? All new houses must have all entry and exit doors fitted with suitable locks in order to combat burglary and help reduce prison over-population?

Cynical? It sounds spot on to me.

I heard some ministerial voice on the radio this morning, explaining that the requirement will be for a downstairs "shower room". This is in view of the ageing population, to help those who could have trouble getting upstairs. The implication of this is presumably that said old person has weak legs.

So instead of being able to sit down in the bath, they'll stand in the shower, eh?

Though I wonder wehre they are going to put all these rooms, as the way forward I thought was to have three and four storey homes to lessen the footprint :roll:

Well, about time, too. I've been fretting about that all weekend, while you've been watching the rugby.

Being of a Suffolk persuasion, you see, I never knew there was a design by Lutyens for Liverpool Cathedral. Why was it never built?

Oh yes, the crypt was built:

In that last link, the part of the crypt that was built is under the flat area to the left of the wigwam - they do guided tours and it's vast. As for the rest of the cathedral, Lutyens himself reckoned it was going to take 200+ years to build which didn't suit the rise of "I want it now" consumer culture in the sixties.

The whole building would have been absurdly big - the clocktower of the university across the road
http://www.danyey.co.uk/livp14.jpg would (if put on wheels) have fitted through the door, and you could have built the Liverpool Anglican cathedral (the biggest religious building in northern Europe) inside it and still had 100' clear to the inside of the dome.

I'd love to see it for real though.

I have attended a day's singing & playing 16th century choral music (organised by an "Early Music" society) in the crypt, which was as far as they got. The size even of that space is extraordinary, so the mind boggles at the scale the place would be if they had finished it. Am I right in saying it would easily have been the biggest church in the world - considerably outstripping St Peter's? The Vatican wouldn't have liked that much. I seem to remember there were drawings on display down there of the plans, but it was a number of years ago, so that's my excuse for not remembering and recognising it. The result of building the crypt only, is that there is a huge platform, on which "Paddy's Wigwam" was later built, one of the few really beautiful examples of 60's architecture imho.

May I continue the game a little longer, and see if anyone knows where this is?
