Took me a while - initially thought it was Austria.

That's it. Well done.

It's an amazing building - the roof obviously being the most notable feature. But when you consider that it was built as a hospice for the poor, it's extraordinary that so much time and money was lavished on it.

Inside there are areas still set out as they would have been when it was in use, showing how the sick were accommodated in little wooden cubicles - spartan, but actually with a lot more privacy than you'd get in a modern general ward.

It's well worth a visit if you're in the Burgundy region. But certainly not the only reason to go there, of course! :wink:

But as with Almshouses in this country, many of which are architecturally quite splendid, I suspect the point was that the more magnifcent the building, the greater the glory reflected on the benefactor, or indeed the religious foundation, and of course more rewards in the hereafter.
