A little antedote to another thread. This picture is from a carpark in Hawes. Note the rather pleasant Pay and Display sign bottom left. Sorry about the cropping but I was actually concentrating on the window.

Now that is funny! My first thought was that the window was made from a single piece, but I dismissed that. My mind was boggling at the thought of all those joints, if it was, as I next thought made from timber.

Is Graham right then - is it perhaps cast iron?

Yes, it's metal (no not plastic - Grahams very small post). Hard to be sure under the paint but I guess it's a single piece of cast iron. It's the museum, ex-railway buildings, at Hawes in Wensleydale.

That's great - it probably is cast in a single piece, and very nice it is too.

I remember Fred Dibnah explaining once how they used to fasten cast iron components together using traditional woodworking joints. The Severn Bridge at Coalbrookdale I think, but I could be wrong.

If someone wants to be recognised as a very skilled woodworker, all they would have to do is manufacture, in wood, that window. All is needed is a saw, a planer, a wooden mallet and a couple of chisels ( plus the wood). To speed things up a router with a few end bits would be a real help.

If my father's straw bale stable* is anything to go by, that cathedral will last long enough to become an ancient monument.

*32 years old when I last saw it, and still going strong - if a few inches shorter than when first constructed.

Damn! I tried googling west_facadea.jpeg , so I could look like a smartie-pants. No result.

Trouble is, I don't know whether "facadea" is the word "facade" in another language, or whether it's the photographer's shorthand for "facade A".

Give us a clue - is it eastern European?
