I've really enjoyed reading what you all thought about it, more than I enjoyed watching the programme. And I'm just so delighted Vicky is talking to her chickens as they have more sense than people realise.
I thought it was a tremendous achievement and the young man was really very sweet and creative indeed. I loved how they picked back the paint for the dotty pattern, and the sensitive way they did the secondary glazing. I thought the overall design sat very well within the framework of the church, and whilst I'd never want to live in such a home, the arguments to create church-houses are compelling.
I wonder where they got the budget of 300k from? That didn't really make sense, as earlier in the programme they'd implied that she was going to work to pay for all the building materials.
I wondered if Miss Pre-Raphaelite had got together with Dr Stick-Insect Worsley to practise their eccentric weak rs? Why must all historians present themselves as posh loons?
But still, enjoyable, despite the less than satisfactory academic stuff.

I, too, found the 'experts' rather irritating, but warmed to the young couple - especially that incredibly lithe and athletic young man who seemed to sustain his initial puppy-like enthusiasm throughout the project. An example to us all, methinks.

Just finished watching this on iplayer. I have to agree with previous comments about the 2 experts, I too found them rather irritating. I do like Caroline Quentin though and was interested in the section on stained glass so from my point of view it wasn't quite a waste of time.

I enjoyed it, but found Caroline Quentin as annoying as the experts! She went on about her house restorations, but I suspect her involvement was more to do with choosing the Aga and which Farrow & Ball paint sample to use.
Possibly - even probably - a deeply unfair thing to say, however in my defence she did say at one point though that she and her husband "had not been hands on" with their restorations, and she referred to the chap with the church as "fixing 7000 roof tiles by himself" when they were clearly slates.
I have nothing but admiration for the commitment, humour and hard work of the new owners though - for the chap to do all that work by himself in a year is a real achievement, especially if you've no previous building experience - not forgetting his wife's hard work to fund the whole thing. I too picked up on the "conjugal rights" comment
- she did seem to be very picky about his work.
I have to say I liked the finished article, but then I fall into the "I'd rather see it converted into a house than fall into dereliction" camp. I do think some of the methods used were not very sympathetic, in one brief clip I'm sure I saw new concrete floors being poured onto a DPM.
The secondary glazing, although done very sympathetically, seemed a bit short sighted to me - fixing it in such a way that you can't get the glass off again without causing damage. Give it a couple of years of muck and spiders webs getting behind his new glass sheets and I think he'll regret that.

I enjoyed watching it, admired the young man for his tenacity, and his wife for not getting her hands dirty !! Caroline Quentin has worked on several houses over the past few years, and certainly beyond choosing an Aga and F&B! I found her ability to talk TO the stars of the show and the villagers, refreshing. The Researchers amused me somewhat--- reminded me of Ptolemy and Marianne,!!!

I watched last nights installment - having missed the previous one.
The pumping station was an interesting building, but I felt that the external render completely changed the character of the building for the worse. Refreshing to see that it was their builder who persuaded them to keep the doors, windows and brassware.
Don't know if Joce saw it, but imago edge would have been equally horrified by the sea of beige on the interior. What a lovely space, wrecked by poor interior design.

I veered between liking and disliking their approach. Part of me wanted to see the stair and mezzanine restored and remain, then I winced when the photograph of the men who built it was displayed. I felt sad that the owners seemed to dismiss the fact that they were blithely destroying everything. Then I quite liked the finished result inside, but not the render. Apart from the obvious enjoyment of space to play etc I was left wondering why buy a building of interest if you totally destroy everything except the shell, front door and door handles. Even the windows narrowly escaped replacement. Whoever is going to know the significance of the building when they see it. The history is consigned to archives.
