Can you remember the make of yours? The one we had in Norwich was a Waterside, but I gather that they've been taken over and the current models aren't a patch on what they used to be, hence my pathetic attempts at research.

I can't really speak for softeners in the UK as I got all mine from here in Ireland however here's one link...http://www.ukwatersofteners.co.uk/ I can't either recommend or decry them but it's a start. I suppose you really need to know how hard your water is and it's Ph number. This number is important as your water needs to be neutral (7) for other treatments to be effective.
I would, in my opinion steer clear of the magnetic or ion type descalers as I'm not really convinced they work as well as a salt re-generated system. Your appliance sounds very good Timinder with it's second chamber for recharging while not interrupting your supply and it's cycle based on units used rather than a fixed re-generation time.
I expect that to comply with your water suppliers by-laws that a non return valve has to be fitted on the inlet side of the unit and a valved by-pass plumbed in so that your supply (albeit hard water) can be maintained should the unit fail or is removed for servicing or replacement.

Congratulations Moo, and sorry but I have not a sniff of advice re the water softener thing, just to say that your name interested me as I am also known as 'Moo' (by my daughters! Never asked but would rather assume it derives from the old Mother thing!) My eldest started calling it me when she was around 7 and it caught on pretty quick with my youngest too. My eldest is now 21 and is now a minnie Moo herself. Guess that makes me Grandma Moo!

I didn't need a hardness test, our water comes out of the tap like a collection of damp stones (well, not quite, but you get the idea)!
Can't remember the make of it, but I can check later.
Yes, Doug, the amount of plumbing sitting below our kitchen sink now looks like an apprentice-piece! There are (from memory) starting from the stopcock:
1) Non-return valve (NRV)
2) spur with isolator for the filtered water
3) 2-way bypass valve for the softener (inlet)
4) 2-way bypass valve for the softener (outlet)
5) spur with isolator valve for the dishwasher
6) spur with isolator valve for the kitchen cold tap
7) Cold water supply for the rest of the house
This ensures that everywhere gets soft water and that everything can be turned off individually if needed. You can't have too may isolators if you ask me!
I'm in the process of moving house (another period house- Late Vic/early Ed), and when we go, I think I'll just take the whole assembly off at the NRV and plumb it back in direct!

You've described the cupboard under the sink perfectly. Full of pipes which condense and turn green (low Ph does that!) and drip into the packets of soap powder and brillo pads turning them rusty...
I keep mentioning the Ph of water because, depending how high or low the number. it can have differing effects on your plumbing system. I remember years ago (in the days when I was wielding the old stilsons) calling at some premises to investigate a problem and was horrified when the first brass fiting I tried to tighten crumbled onto the floor followed by hot water spurting everywhere through the resultant leak. It transpired theat the water had de-zincified the brass fittings and I had to replace every one of them with gunmetal fittings and fit a sacrificial annode in the hot water cylinder.
On another occasion I was called to the house of o friend of mine who only had a trickle of hot water from the tap. I checked all the obvious suspects like the storage cistern etc etc and eventually disconnected the pipe from the top of the hot water cylinder and found that it was blocked with copper sulphate that had leached from the copper pipework in the house.
Happy days...

Mine aren't green, but they do drip nicely due to all that cold water rushing through them; it took me a while before I was convinced that it wan't one of the (about 20!) joints leaking...

Moo (this is totally OT as always) - I was in Thorns today, buying broom (not fork) handles. And the wisteria along the front of St Giles Church is looking absolutely spectacular!

Actually, our house had been offices when we bought it, as were most of the other buildings in the street. Over the years it became more and more residential, starting with an empty builders' merchant that turned into posh flats over Loch Fyne, a couple of other places that returned to being proper houses, and lots of flats. So you could say that we started the trend. So there, Mr P.

Belatedly, many congratulations on your son's wedding. I confess to peeking at the pics in the other place and it looked absolutely glorious!
As for the water softener, very envious you're considering this, we just use the plain old Brita filter and Calgon in the washing machine. it isn't ideal.
