I once had over 25,000 tester paint pots to dispose of when a major paint supplier to a DIY chain stopped trading. We got rid of them to a community re-paint scheme in the end - but I can't begin to imagine the frustration of having to empty enough tester pots into a paint tray to paint a whole room!

This thread got so long that I didn't have time to read it all again. I recall, however, Moo pointing out that Earthborn clay paint had a very limited range but I can't recall if anyone advised that Ty Mawr now offer a tinting service and have up to 126 colours. I was browsing this morning after 3 test pot failures (expensive business!) and came across the following page on their site:

Just for info, there are a number of suppliers that have a matching service and they can be found on the Earthborn website.
Does anyone have any experience of using Rose of Jericho distemper? I am wondering if the subtleties in the finish that sound so attractive are noticeably more attractive than a limewash finish? I am also tempted to use distemper in order to reduce the number of coats I have been advised to use for limewash (5 or 6!).

I've used their distempers, but I haven't used limewash so can't be much help with how they compare. I found using the distemper quite hard as I'm used to modern emulsion with a roller, this has to go on with a brush and is very thin and quick-drying so misting the walls as you go may may be required.The resulting finish is certainly less even and I'd say more "period-looking" than modern emulsion. I'll be using their soft distemper in the drawing room as I can't find any other company that does such an array of Italianate peaches.

Here's casein distemper in the little loo - this is "Eau de Nil"

And the bit above the plate shelf is Soft Distemper in "Tuscan Red", with the ceiling in Rose of Jericho's "Buttermilk" in soft distemper too. Definitely more mottledyness in the soft distemper as opposed to casein.

You should not have problems with R of J products, as Joce found, it does rather depend on the surface upon which you are using distemper. Personally I have never had any problems whatsoever. R of J have an excellent technical advice service, so a chat with them before you purchase will be very useful.

Worked with a chap who painted his mothers house with all the tins of paint he found in his late dads shed mixed together in a large "jam pan" it made a light mauve/purple sort of colour his mum quite liked, he ran out with one window left to paint! phil.

Thanks for this helpful advice, particularly Joce for the pics off your gorgeous red room. I can see the 'mottledyness' and its certainly what I'd like to achieve but the irreversible nature of distemper, should I play to my usual bad form with strong colours, I may need to use clay paint to rectify matters as I know I can rely on them for ease and coverage. I think I'll go for limewash in brick red (eek!). Spoke to RoJ who suggested a dilute wash for the ceiling beams. Will try and post the results though despite all the advice about pixel reduction, and setting up various photo sharing accounts, I am ashamed to say I still haven't mastered it. New year resolution, maybe.

And what is your point about distemper not being reversible? It's very reversible - just wash it off. But brick red limewash sounds very nice indeed.

Just what I was going to say to Lu, Joce, distemper is easily removed-- if you need to-- anyway I should think a coat of claircoll over the top would allow one to build up a fresh colour if necessary.

Ok - will try again when I get a minute -with photo bucket this time. The reason I thought that distemper was irreversible was from an earlier thread where Robgil seemed to be saying this was so. I'll go back and check anyway and ring RoJ again in the morning. Off to bed now to dream of soft-distempered rooms in subtle hues...getting a bit obsessive I think.
