My son aged 8 saw me looking at the pics you have all posted of favorite old buildings and asked "whatya lookin at ?"(as they do!)

He wants you all to know that his favorite old building is a house that was lived in by a famous lady - and you have to guess what it's called and where it is (they love guessing games and bad jokes at 8!)



it's not very old -but then neither is he!!

- youngest offspring is happy that you all know your stuff - now when he grows up and buys his first wreck to renovate - he can feel confident in the forum's ability to help with his tricky issues

when we pan forward 30 years we can only guess at what these issues may be

Whilst off-topic Shelli's grandson is planning a nostalgic trip in an original Stagecoach (48 seat single-decker that is) - and he's travelling to the bus-stop in his classic Ford Ka.

Oh God - it sounds awful, doesn't it?

And quite probably I'll still be posting that I've nearly finished grouting the slate flags in the lounge!

I second the thoughts on Blickling....the scullery there is exactly the sort of feeling I hope to get in ours when I finally win the lottery :wink:

Felbrigg Hall has amazing kitchen gardens (much more impressive that the house imo) although it always makes me feel very guilty about the lack of weeding in ours.

As a break from NT properties, I must confess to a love for Babington House in Somerset http://www.babingtonhouse.co.uk/. The combination of interiors, fantastic food and pampering are wonderful. It's also one of the few really good hotels that seems to actively encourage children. I took my wife there at a point when a lack of hot water or central heating and a leaking roof were getting too much....it worked a treat.

As an aside to the Beatrix Potter posts, we once considered buying the house that Eileen Soper - Potter's illustrator - used to live in. The first floor on one side of the house had a huge picture window overlooking the grounds, which was apparently used as her studio. Most of the 4 acre 'garden' was a completely untouched wildlife refuge, although I believe that most of the grounds were left to the RSPB with a covenant to leave it untouched, which is still is today.

Cheating slightly as my choice is not restricted to 1 building....but an entire city. Venice is wonderful...moreso in late Winter/early Spring. I recommend Feb/March as it's not too crowded and there's something about the watery winter sun which seems to enhance the buildings.

Thanks for the recommendation Pford75. Mrs P and I were talking about a trip to Venice only the other day. We've never been - and we don't really know why, although I suspect that my hatred of tourist crowds is probably partly to blame.
