It's just some of us look on and weep, at what some folks choose to do.

I'm getting exactly the opposite reaction to the stone walls I'm exposing (also from under cement pebble dash). Everyone loves it. Nobody has suggested painting it (which isn't recommended anyway as its sandstone).

A quick google of houses in west Wales shows about a third being bare stone so it wouldn't appear at first glance to be a historically wrong thing to do either.

Well maybe - and some folks love uPVC windows too.

I wouldn't always go by what people 'love' - taste alters, is fickle, and frequently uninformed. Lots of folk love 'exposing' internal stone too, they seem to think it was how it would have been originally, but it rarely was.

But it's your house. If you want it naked, that's up to you. My house isn't rendered as was never meant to be, it's not the tradition here and so the stone is worked and laid better.

Where there is a tradition of render or wash, it's often because it gave protection.

My newly limewashed flint house was limewashed for a number of years before being snowcemed/sandtexted and half cement rendered.......... at least half a dozen layers revealed during works. limewash does not adhere that well to flint as it is non porous, so it is slowly starting to spall off... another 10 years and the noses off the majority of the flints will be poking through - can't wait!

Made a little progress today (note the inevitable really stubborn bit in the bottom left hand corner):

Those windows won't be there for much longer either - timber sashes wait patiently in the barn ......

Of course, removal of the really stubborn bit will bring collapse of entire wall...
