Now doubt it was (rightly) shrugged off with some laughter at the time. These days it would probably result in full-on legal action with parents suing the school for damages and emotional stress and social services providing counselling to all the pupils.

Well, we laughed but when the housemaster appeared he was furious and wanted to know who had done it.

Fortunately not.
The school had handymen who plastered the ceiling as it was cheaper and quicker than taking down all the laths.
