Would these windows have been sashes?

Don't worry, the front door has long been replaced by a nice wooden georgian one. (Child on tricycle got considerably bigger too!!) - anyhow - We are left with the windows, totally yuk I know. Talking about windows with Joce yesterday on our lovely day out has set me thinking again.
If we replaced upstairs windows - I was thinking nice wooden casements, but actually the windows are quite large - about a metre by 1.5 metres, so I'm wondering if they would have been sashes rather than casements before? House is originally 1780 but has somewhat aggrandized' in the victorian era I guess.

I'd guess they would have been sashes based on the arrangement of the replacements -but that's only a guess!

In my very inexpert view they'd have been sashes. How pretty it would be to replace them, but as we discussed yesterday eye-wateringly expensive and when there's so much else to buy...

Lovley to see a pic of your house again though, we don't hear much about it and it's very handsome and would like to be talked about more I'm sure.

Did the plants up the trellises work out? I've never had much luck with them.

Bays definitely added in late 1800s i'd have thought. Not sure re flat rooves, but assume probably small sashes before they were installed? Not sure. Vs cottages on our road it seems at least to be 'trying' to be grander, and its certainly bigger, which set me thinking, as I was picturing casements as the cottages yup the road have.....

Joce, not trained the wisteria up a trellis yet, but its growing fit to bust, so my hopes are definitely up!

Cost is an issue, as you say, but after our discussions was wondering if one, upstairs, wooden window with all the others plastic for now, is still better than 100% plastic! Having seen how big they are though, i'm not sure even thats an option!

I agree that sash windows are likely to have been the originals in your lovely house.

But, here's your dilemma.

Wooden windows are, as we all know, much more environmentally friendly (not to mention good-looking) than plastic ones.

But your house already HAS the plastic windows. So, arguably, your "greenest" choice is actually to do nothing, thereby avoiding the cost to the environment of making and fitting your new wooden windows, and disposing of the ripped-out plastic ones.

I don't envy you that tricky choice.

If you do decide on sashes, it might be an idea to do a bit of photoshopping to help you choose their actual style.
I'm only guessing, but it's likely that georgian multi-paned ones might look a bit incongruous*. Perhaps the victorian ones with a glazing bar up the centre (or two. much nearer the outside edges) would sit well with the proportions of the windows? It might even be possible to get them double-glazed....



*I'm thinking about the ground-floor windows, of course.

Thanks Moo and Penners. Are either of you guys 'up' on photoshop etc? Not sure how to tackle doing a photoshop look at different options. Thanks for the environmental guilt Penners! You're quite right of course, and it is a dilemma, except that we can't afford to do anything at the moment. Does it help they are almost 30 years old? I know I know, but they're so ugly!

Also, any chance of linking me to the kind of windows you mean Moo? In my ignorance I work better with visuals than descriptions......

Actually, having studied your house photo again, I'm having second thoughts about the single glazing bar for the largest windows - those in the centre of the bays. I'm not certain that a single central glazing bar will lend enough vertical emphasis to those rather wide windows.

I've been trawling the internet for window images to use as photoshop fodder, in order to create experimental images for you, but so far nothing suitable has appeared. However, I'll keep trying.

Right - on the basis that I haven't been able to find suitably angled/exposed images of Victorian sash windows to copy, I've done a "quick and dirty" manipulation of the ground floor right-hand bay. As Moo suggested, I've done a version with a single central glazing bar and a version with two glazing bars, near the edges.

Moo, please tell me if I've got this wrong.

For what it's worth, I think I do slightly prefer the single bar version.

No, it's Photoshop. I'll certainly do the first floor for you, provided you don't hold me to a timetable. My sister and b-i-l are arriving at any minute to spend a few days with us.

Thanks again . I really think they look so much better, and add in them being actually done, and the look of wood vs plastic, there's no contest for me - sorry environment. These will have to go on the 'pay and display' list. I'm thinking £1000 per window upstairs but it may be wise to get a joiner to come look.

Need some more details but I think I'd quote less than £1000 for the upstairs windows, in oak.

Sure.

The bay windows (you're right they're never 18th century) are pretty wide. Penners' plan is quite plausible but there is a possibility that they had a transom - a fixed timber ~3/4 way up with fixed lights above and casements below.
