Re woodworm/death watch,my grandmother had friends that were retired and lived in a small farmworkers cottage on the welsh borders. This was in the 50s and the cottage was basic, earth loo and a board on the wall with "pigeon holes" in to get upstairs. They used to bring a log in (I think it was ash) strip the bark off it and hang it from the ceiling in the downstairs room by leather straps.I was told that being "new" wood it attracted beetles/grubs and on the first fire of the year in the autumn it was burned and replaced with a fresh one.I an not sure if it worked but it seems a bit more "green" than chemicals! They were both short and had hops, lavender and a ham and pheasants hanging from the ceiling.phil.
