Nope, that should have read big not bif - although if you have such a quantity of pitch pine about your person then I suspect EH north east region would be overjoyed to know about it - as would we North Eastern Railway members!

Would you need a joiner just to nail some split planks and tar it all? Surely a far cheaper option than cats iron.

Got out my 'The Building of Bath' book:

'The stone parapet had first become a standard feature of Georgian houses in London since the London Building Acts of 1707 outlawed projecting wooden eaves in order to prevent fire spreading from one house to another. This meant that wooden gutters had to be set back behind a stone or brick parapet. Builders in Bath, however, copied the London practice because they wished their houses to be as 'modern' as possible. ... The rain or snow that fell on the front or rear slopes ran down into parapet gutters lined with sheets of lead laid on wooden boards. A plumber contracted for all the leadwork and the surveyor inspected the gutters to check that he had not cheated on the amount.

Draining the concealed roof valley in the centre was even more troublesome. A 'secret gutter' also known as a 'flying' or 'box' gutter - carried the water through the attic to parapet gutter, normally the one at the rear.

Drainpipes made of lead - although stone or wood was common at the beginning of our period and iron ones at the end - carried water down from the parapet gutters to the basement. Several houses might share a single pipe at the front to avoid cluttering up the facades. On the better streets the pipes were either concealed inside the front wall - as on Royal Crescent for example - or there was a secret gutter to carry all the water in the front parapet gutter right through the attic to the drainpipes at the rear. The rainwater then ran through the attic to the drainpipes at the rear. The rainwater then ran through narrow ashlar drains into the Grand Common Sewer under the street although a wooden barrel or lead cistern often stood in the basement to collect a quantity for the household's use.

In the 17th century open drains ran down the street to carry away the rainwater...'

There are diagrams which make it easier to understand the construction - and you can appreciate the restoration nightmare this has made! Deteriorating internal guttering... hmmm.
