I'm kind of sitting here reeling with amazement at people's warm bathrooms, heated seats and hardy attitudes! :lol: Michelle 73, (were you born in 73? Me too!) I love the tip about the nips and drams! No wonder previous owner used to have a constant tot of his home brew on the go, this house needs alcoholics to live in it. Fortunately, it's been blessed in that respect.

Just realised though, having been quite warm on ladder all day, that as heat rises it makes sense to spend your time in the upper half of the room. No wonder people had such ornate ceilings.

Last year I bought a heated fleece blanket. It is lovely for when you are sat still.

I also always put my berghaus down and feather gilet (sp)? on over my many layers. It keeps my body really warm and doesn't restrict movement.

Outside jobs, which you will be doing this year with chooks, I pull on a pair of breathable waterproof pants, and a really cosy ski hat.

michelle73...Yes, very imginative wasn't I?!! Why couldn't I have come up with something a bit wittier or more mysterious than my date of birth, doh!

Sorry to brag but yes yes yes !!...the heated car seats are absolute bliss and warm up the lower back as well as the bum. It makes my commute to and from Edinburgh every day so much more bearable.

Is maybe the kind of blanket 'Marm's speaking of? Amazing- I didn't even know they existed, thank you! I need a gilet too, and the waterproof trousers. I'm starting to question the sanity of not installing the chickens near the house...

No smouldering fire I'm afraid but here's my organised chaos, cosy enough not to feel the need to do the whole frosty stroll thing (the door and "fireplace" are both now a greenish black, by the way)

F&B's Book Room Red "To do the work of either No. 42 Picture Gallery Red or No. 43 Eating Room Red but in smaller rooms." It's south facing - in a north facing room it might be a bit oppressive. The woodwork is now Carriage Green (if I had a panelled room I'd do the whole lot in that, very Hogarthian, but 1880s 2 up 2 down terraces don't usually come with panelling), and the period properties are actually (slightly tacky) Portmeirion souvenirs which make up for the rather conspicuous lack of stiff gilt-edged invites...

Well the Virginia creeper has blown away and I'm not doing bonfires this year on the new lawn but I quite like this pic taken recently. Anyone suggest a good caption to go with?? - please don't mention the weather proof masonry paint on the cement rendered wall in the background - I know, I know !!

Gareth - I'm astonished at the lack of "stiff, gilt edged invites", and share your disappointment. I recently invited the Duchess of Rutland to tea and to take the view of her fine castle in the distance, and she has not accepted. Maybe these people are in awe of us and know they would have no conversation.
I love that Book Room Red though and am pleased you posted it as I bought a sample pot of that colour, tried it out and was none the wiser in imagining how it would look over a large area! At first glance I thought "out with the cheque book, I've found what I want" but, oh the disappointment on spending an extra 30 seconds looking at that site - plastic panelling, plastic library shelves, plastic plasterwork. Aaaargh. :evil:

and looking at a completely plastic room! I know!! It's a scandalous deception, that company. We've got the glossy catalogue and nowhere within it is the word "plastic". We ordered some mouldings last year before we knew any better - imagine the disappointment when they arrived! They're up; Chris insisted that they shouldn't go to waste. But one day they will have to be replaced.

We've used F&B Radicchio in our hallway. We have ancient panelling which is yet to be painted (hence the splashes of red on the woodwork...) but I think I'll stick with cream rather than green - might be a bit much! The modern panelling on the ceiling in another bit of the hallway will be painted in Radicchio though where the walls are beigey/grey. Red is such a lovely warm colour - very hard to get exactly the tone you want! This is probably more pink than we realised but I do love the colour - especially at night.
