All he is saying is that there would in older properties often have just been one horizontal glazing bar, albeit fairly thick. I tend to think this is a personal like of his. As has been mentioned glazing/windows is a very
personal thing. All the windows in my property were replaced in one fell swoop in the early 80s. We have tracked down one of the residents when this was done and I am interested in finding out if it was a like for like swap.
As the property was once 3 seperate cottages there would have been a right mix of windows I think, or then again maybe not but that is pure speculation as we have not been able to unearth any really old photos.
Yours look fine in being 4 units per light any more would have looked too fussy and a single horizontal , well until a see a house with some of these I cannot say.

As usual nothing is simple. Considered the Pilkington Spacia then discounted it for the following reasons. The air extraction plug usually black but can get silver that has to be on every pane. The delivery is around 12 weeks, as would be any replacement time. One cannot get it in toughened glass and there is a minimum size of 350mm x 200mm. I considered just using Spacia in the front so as to leave the perfectly good frames in situ. Though due to the unavailability of toughened glass and a few of the panes being smaller than Pilkingtons minimum they went west. Plus did not like the idea of all theses extract plugs with the upstairs windows each having 9 panes. Cost was not a factor, expensive but not prohibitively so. Oh and by the way they are made in Japan not the USA.
So am back to getting slim DG units and replacement frames with all its upheaval.
So i then though secondary which I had already dismissed. Reading about one type of glazing versus another leads one down certain alleys. My experience of secondary was big chunky frames ugly looking to say the least. Now it appears that there are some very slim units about so am considering them as I hate to waste anything and as my windows frames are in good nick seems a pity to dump them.
So has anybody experience of secondary glazing ie specific manufacturers?

We are going for a different aesthetic, but there is also the option to mount glazing bars inside a single piece of double glazed glass and then glue some bits of wood to each side to pretend. It makes it much easier and cheaper to maintain ventilation around the glazing while maintaining thin profiles.

For secondary glazing I looked around for a long time and only found astonishingly expensive ugly stuff. I made my own. Table saw and router table cost less than £1K. Time is free now we don't have jobs any more. Though wood is still a little tricky to get hold of.

I did think about finding a new career making secondary glazing that is actually nice. But I can make more money selling the house to someone rich from London and they will probably want it to be more finished.
