Ah...having missed that particular part of that particular roof out of our exhaustive (ahem) survey of the house prior to purchase...I simply have no idea whats up there. However, the ceiling there is one of our particularly fine hardboard ones, and will be coming down this summer. Crawling into that bit of the loft is kind of impossible as it houses the National Collection of Cold Water Tanks.
Surely the swinging corpse scenario doesn't work as the trapdoor opens upwards into the room, and this would make hard work of your traditional hanging.
Plain old bedroom access I would suppose, tho' it does seem a silly place to make it as the ladder would have been infront of the door.
These days it gets most use when I suprise the kids by shouting through it at mealtimes.. keeps them on ther toes........

I suspect the nearness to the door suggests deliveries then.
As to the hanging - I suppose if self inflicted the trapdoor could be opened and then jump, the rope tied to a beam above. I think unlikely so don't try it to find if it works...
