The trouble with posting a statement like that is that it points the finger of suspicion at anyone and everyone who has disagreed with you on that topic

Biff - I'm not intending to point the finger at anyone...I simply don't know. But the content of the messages makes it very clear that it is someone familiar with the thread...and let's just say that they don't wholly agree with my 'undecided' stance.

Anyhow...this is going very off topic (my fault I know)....so I'll duck out and leave you to it.

And to get the thread back on topic and from where we started, here's the latest map showing Arctic sea ice is now down to a new record low, and with maybe another fortnight of melting to go:

There's a difference between winding people up a bit, having a bit of fun, and genuine trolling. We've had some really unpleasant stuff here over time, as long time posters can tell you. They eventually give up.


As for MSN - no it's not your fault, it's a warning though brought on by experience.

Heed what I said about e-mails etc too. There are some nasty people out there. (Not me - I'm lovely really!!! I just can argue for England, and at times I do...) Don't give too many personal details away via any website until you trust the person concerned.

I've met and corresponded with some smashing people via PPUK, but as my other half said - only nutters spend time posting on websites...

And do report what's gone on with PM stuff to Rob, and anything else is harrassment and unless you are over-reacting a bit (I know it's easy to do when it's all a bit of a shock) then if it continues keep a record and tell the police.

But this is a public site, and can be read the world over.

And back to Biff... who would buy you a pint in the pub and tell you very nicely and very eruditely just how wrong you are, but nothing more!

A friend with a 'public' e-mail address had all his waiting e-mails deleted last week while on holiday by his ISP.

Despite paying for a service that allows massive amounts of storage, they said he had too many - some 24,000 had built up over a few days, mostly spam.

Needless to say he's changing ISP!

Mine isn't quite at that amount, but it is hugely on the increase, and it's a pain as at times genuine ones drop into my junk e-mail box and so I have to go through daily and fish them out.

Inundated? Yes, I get quite a lot but my spam filter is pretty effective. It might waste a minute per day of my life. It would be nice if ISPs took a more pro-active approach to kicking spammers off the net. Fake watches seem to be winning over sex and drugs these days :?

A little diversion from the Arctic, Hurricane Felix is the second Atlantic Cat 5 storm this year. That's remarkable as they are very rare. There were two in 1961 and two in 2005. There have only been 31 Atlantic cat 5s since records began, five of the top ten since 2004! Dean popped in to 9th strongest on record.

Yes, fake watches, but I still get ones designed to make me buy things to enhance - er - my lurve life, meet Russian lovelies, gamble online, and a few weeks' ago had a really bad bout of hundreds of e-mails purporting to be returned e-mails which were undeliverable.

These flooded both my inbox and spam box, and although some came with attachments and links others didn't. A variant was those 'out of office' auto replies from totally fictitious people.

I called Bullguard (which I like better than Norton) and they seemed to have been able to put a stop to those, all we can think is that they were designed to see if this was a 'live' e-mail address.

Hurricanes - no doubt there is an explanation which has nothing to do with global warming, climate change, and man's inhumanity to the planet then!

Excuse me - must rush out to buy the Torygraph... 8)

I used to get loads of invites to enlarge my debts and consolidate my p---s, but it just seems to be adverts for septic tanks now

Well, it isn't me, quite the opposite.

FWIW I dont think I've ever been rude in pm, the dynamics are rather different and the point(s) of the discussion different.

FWIW stupidity and quantity is what pees me off, and those 2 only normally occur in public discussion threads.

I can understand someone convinced other peoples' actions are going to kill people, and getting wound up, forgetting that the jury really is still out. That happens too often. But to lay into someone simply because they havent made their mind up strikes me as strange. Are you sure thats the reason? Resentments can come from many other things than climate change.

Most web forums have more lurkers than posters.

Personally I would never post IM contact details or anything else, its the golden gate to this sort of insanity. With just one contact its easy to block someone.

Well - there are folks who post here who know where I live and haven't come in the night (yet) with an axe... in fact whom I would trust implicitly. But mostly I'd urge caution.

I've been off this board for well over a month (health problems) and have just glanced over this very long thread.

One thing I did notice, unless I missed it, is that no one has mentioned the very energetic campaign American oil companies such as Exxon waged to discredit scientists and studies that suggested a man made cause to global warming and their promotion of scientists, no matter how off-the-wall, who would support the oil company's view. Hundreds of thousands of dollars (some say millions) in ads, lobbying governmental agencies, publishing questionable studies, and supporting (by grants) scientists who only don't do raw research themselves, but spend their time opposing other scientists research and data, all this has influenced the debate for years.

Whether or not the oil companies have a legitimate viewpoint, it can't be argued that they have an interest in maintaining the view that carbon emissions aren't a part of global warming and that any temperature anomalies now are simply normal variation.

Well yes - we are aware of all this, those of us who take the time and trouble, over many decades, to keep up with international environmental issues, but frankly it's really not worth too much effort on this forum debating anything in depth of this nature.

It just ends up with acrimony.

There are better and more important arenas in which to lobby.

It's useful to raise the issues every now and again, for those who may be new to it all though.

Well, that's what this forum is about...

But there are people who post here whom I trust, and I hope others have made friends too.

It's not all acrimony. There are good people out there too.

I just urge people to be cautious, that's all.

It's odd though - and I may be tempting fate here - for all the flak I get here I've only had one very odd PM, and that was from someone simply trolling - very blatant and quite harmless!

PM's are easily traced as the name of the sender is on them!

Apparently, I won a few million Euros on a Dutch online lottery just recently. The fact that I didn't actually enter in the first place or have a ticket wasn't a problem; all I had to do was send them all my bank account details and they'd send me the money.

Shades of the now infamous Nigerian bank scams :roll: Still, I guess they only need to catch a tiny proportion of the people they spam :evil:

Yes, I get e-mails from various banks asking me to give my passwords etc... funny not the one I bank with!

I gather many do give out these details though.
