Why has the glass on my wood stove turned an amber colour?

Our old "Montrose" stove doesn't have any of these fancy airwash systems and the tar builds up on the glass undisturbed by any regular cleaning. But a good hot fire every so often brings the glass up as clean as new, so I reckon why expend the effort on cleaning it either daily or weekly - let the glass act as an indicator for what is probably happening in terms of resin build-up throughout the rest of the fire and chimney.

One word of advice, though - if you are used to the heat of a normal softwood fire, and the usual nick-nacks and candles start to encroach, remember that they will melt into a horrible mess when you put on that occasional, roaring, hardwood or peat fire!
